Weird Gary's Cataract Surgery

Donation protected
Hi everyone, you may know our sweet little schnauzer/werewolf hybrid rescue Weird Gary from Instagram or Musical.ly (@weirdgary) or maybe you've been lucky enough to experience his underbite in person. He was recently diagnosed with a fast developing cataract.

A few months ago, on a lazy Sunday afternoon, as I was watching the Weird G watch Animal Planet, which I do often - because I'm obsessed with how cute he is - I noticed a slight blue haze in the pupil of his right eye. I panicked. Then I called the Veterinary Care Center in Los Angeles and made an appointment. Then I called my mom.

One vet visit and one ophthalmology specialist appointment later the verdict was in: our 4 year old fur muffin had a spontaneous juvenile cataract and was slowly going blind.

The vet prescribed him drops to help with the inflamation and discomfort and informed us, that yes, he would need surgery in the future and that yes, it would be expensive, but as it didn't seem to be obstructing his vision and juvenile cataracts tend to progress slowly, we would have at least a year to plan for it.

Not many people know this, but I suffered a major accident at the end of last summer, shattering my wrist and requiring two reconstructive surgeries. One in 2016 and one in the beginning of 2017. The high deductibles from my insurance hit hard. Hearing that, while inevitable, Gary's surgery was not an immediate need came as quite a relief after such a physically, mentally, and financially trying 10 months.

A month later, we realized that this was not the case. His cataract was thickening steadily and was beginning to hinder his sight, depth perception, and affect his quality of life. We made another appointment.

The advancement was astounding and it was clear - or more cloudy - that surgery sooner than later was now in Weird Gary's best interest.

(pre-cataract, pondering the meaning of life, or how and when he will finally be able to eat that squirrel that lives in the tree outside our window)

And you think, it's just one cataract. On a dog. How much can that really be? And the answer is, way more than you think. Like, WAY MORE. Like, as much as a human.

People have been asking for a way to help, so we decided to set up this GoFundMe page. If you’d like to contribute to renewing Gary's sight, we would appreciate it endlessly. And probably cry some more, except this time out of gratitude. All of your donations would go not only towards Gary's most recent bills, but also towards his upcoming surgery and aftercare moving forward.
