Hello my name is Andres Mo Moreno, I’m a senior at the University of New Mexico in the department of theatre and dance and I am doing an undergraduate honors project. What this project entails is a yearlong research project culminating in a 30-page paper and performance. I myself have written the script, will be directing the production and doing some of the design (set and sound). The production is coming up fast so I need your help over the next thirty days.
The performance will be a one night only event on April 26th at 8pm in the Experimental theatre in the CFA building on UNM campus and it’s FREE.
This project began last summer on June 12th the morning after the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, being that I am a gay male I was deeply saddened by the events. What made things even more terrifying for me was where I was at the time. I was visiting a cousin in LA and was boarding a flight home that evening, my cousin and I had talked about possibly going to the gay pride parade in west Hollywood before having to take me to the airport but that plan was scratched when he was called into work. My cousin works at a local news station and was called in to cover a story about a man by the name of James Wesley who was arrested early that morning in Santa Monica, his car was full of weapons and he had plans of attending the parade as well.
It is crazy to me that in the year 2016, being queer is still such a hot topic, you would think that with all the advancements that we’ve made; medicine, technology, civil rights, etc. that being queer would be a nonissue. But it’s not unfortunately.
With this project, I have taken my own life experiences and those of several others that I have had the opportunity to speak with and interview to create a guide of sorts to questioning and freshly out of the closet gay men.
By exploring three specific areas of gay men’s culture I want to be a voice to those who are too scared to admit to others who they really are and make them realize that they are more than they believe.
The three topics of discussion in this project are:
-Gay categories
-Cruising
-Gyms/Spas
Along with these three topics I want to stress the fact that Gay men are merely one letter in the greater LGBTQ+ acronym, we as queer people must work together and that starts with understanding how each of us functions.
Now I know what some of you might be thinking; why only gay men? The simple answer to this is; time. I do not have enough time to learn about other areas of the LGBTQ+ community, it has taken me over five years to understand the topics which I explored with this project and I promise you as donors that this is step ONE. I have plans to continue this research after graduating this May and would like to produce more plays on these subjects.
What this money will go towards:
-Material for the set (steel, spandex, lumber, screws, staples)
-Costume pieces
-Props
-Paying designers
-Paying videographers
-Rental fees for any additional equipment
**Anything that is left over will be donated to the Trevor Project and Human Rights Campaign**
