"Painting is a lot harder than pickin' cotton. Cotton's right there for you to pull off the stalk, but to paint, you got to sweat your mind." - Clementine Hunter⠀
⠀
Clementine Hunter's images reflect the African-Christian traditions and practices of the rural South. Hunter documented people going to church, attending funerals, weddings, and taking part in baptisms, all activities held at St. Augustine Catholic Church, near the artist's home at Melrose Plantation in Natchitoches, Louisiana.⠀
⠀
Clementine Hunter's work is currently featured in the museum's Self-Taught Genius Gallery, part of the current show, A Piece of Yourself: Gift Giving in Self-Taught Art on view through December 31, 2019. ⠀

Showered with decorative themes made from random shapes and materials such as silk or satin, crazy quilts rose to prominence in the quilting community during the late 1880s. Many of the quilts were often nonfunctional and deviated from the typical three-layer quilt fabric to only two layers. ⠀
⠀
Learn more about crazy quilts by visiting the museum's latest exhibition, WALL POWER! Quilts from the Werner and Karen Gundersheimer Gift is on view through September 1st.⠀

French writer Georges Bataille wrote that images have the power not to comfort us but, to the trouble and worry us, to “open us up” and make us “bleed inside.” The fertile and loaded images of Henry Darger operate in this register. The self-taught author and illustrator's universe explodes with terrifying storms, torturous battles, and tethered preteen girls—all there to be tamed and rescued. Darger was born in Chicago and orphaned at an early age, and he spent part of his childhood in a boys’ home in Lincoln, Illinois. He repeatedly tried to escape, and at age sixteen he finally succeeded. In Chicago, he became a dishwasher and janitor at local hospitals, occupations he held for some fifty years. ⠀

Did you know that the museum has an art program for high school students residing or attending school in Queens⠀
⠀
Last week’s Youth Art Connection program focused on quilts. The students enjoyed viewing, discussing and sketching the quilts at the museum, followed by an appliqué workshop with textile artist @emma__redmond.⠀
⠀
The Youth Art Connection (YAC) program takes place at the museum’s Collections and Education Center in Long Island City, Queens. Students learn and explore folk and self-taught art and the possible careers in the arts, all through a variety of engaging activities. Participants view and discuss the museum’s current exhibitions, create art inspired by the collection, go behind the scenes at the Collections and Education Center, and visit New York City galleries, museums, and arts organizations. ⠀
⠀

"Making art takes on a wider metaphysical meaning as if the artists are ‘offering’ a piece of themselves. These works are created during milestones and other moments of emotional significance in the artist’s life. This deeply personal sentiment materializes in the final product.” - assistant curator @steffi__duarte on her curated exhibition, A Piece of Yourself: Gift Giving in Self-Taught Art. ⠀

"While the museum's collection is a hub for exemplary quilts, it's unusual...for the institution to be gifted a full-fledged collection such as this. However, when such occurrences do come about, it's an opportunity ripe for observing, studying, and presenting a unified aesthetic." - @SwirlgirlWorldtour for @archdigestpro⠀

The museum thanks Werner and Karen Gundersheimer for the tangibly powerful gift of quilts to the collection.⠀
⠀
Their gift introduced new patterns into the Museum’s collection, including Joseph’s Coat, Alphabet (pictured behind the Gundersheimers), and Spider Web, all graphically striking examples that embody what the couple calls “wall power.” This is an exhibition you won't want to miss. ⠀

Join the museum from 1 - 2 pm for Families and Folk Art: Quilted Stories. With the intent of introducing children ages 4 to 12 as well as their accompanying adults to folk art through interactive tours, participants will be able to study and explore the twenty-one striking quilts freshly added to the collection. Once a creative spark is made, children and adults alike will then return to the studio to create their very own unique artwork that responds to the quilts on view.⠀
