Wallenstein was our fifth music director, and the first to be born in the United States. A former cellist in the orchestra, he took the LA Phil in its first-ever world tour, visiting Tokyo, Okinawa, Manila, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City (then Saigon), Hong Kong, Taipei, and more for a staggering 58-concert run. Following his tenure in Los Angeles, he became a perennial guest conductor throughout the US, and served as an instructor at the Peabody Institute and Juilliard for a number of years.
