Early works from the 1980s emerged in the wake of explosive changes in political, social and cultural conditions marked by the AIDS crisis, a fervent discourse on sexuality and gender, and feminist activism. However, since the early 1990s, Smith has become increasingly interested in alternative narratives, exploring history, myths, legends and tales, religious belief and the traditions of nonwestern cultures. Following an impactful exhibition at #PaceGallery in New York, a current installation at the American Academy in Rome, and her upcoming inclusion in #ArtBasel Unlimited, #YtoBarrada's museum show in Aspen will provide audiences with a comprehensive look at her multi-faceted practice. The exhibition will be on view through November 25, 2018.-Barrada’s exhibition title, “Klaatu Barrada Nikto,” is inspired by a key line in the 1951 science-fiction film "The Day the Earth Stood Still." Functioning as a shibboleth, magical incantation, and a code for action, the untranslatable phrase was adapted by Barrada as an entry point for her Aspen Art Museum exhibition—a constellation of works that directly addresses the shifting notions of authenticity and tradition. See the show at #PaceGallery's space on the 15th floor of the Hong Kong Entertainment Building, located at 30 Queen's Road Central.-For this installation, #LoieHollowell selected paintings and drawings that share common color hues, installed in four groupings throughout the gallery. Before embarking on each of her paintings, Hollowell carefully works with pastels and graphite on paper to test out various combinations of color, shading, and forms.-To create her paintings, she builds upon flat linen-covered panels by applying shapes carved from high-density foam that are then sealed with a mixture of sawdust and acrylic medium. Once these sculpted linen panels have reached a perfectly smooth, undulating surface, Hollowell begins to apply oil paint. Titled "Au-Delà des Limites," or Beyond Limits, the exhibition is comprised of nine immersive installations, and will be on view through 9 September, 2018.-In the 360° immersive and interactive installations, visitors are surrounded on all sides by images straight out of the imaginations of the teamLab crew. Both electronic and organic in inspiration, the installations change as visitors amble from one spot to another. For the artist's second exhibition with #PaceGallery in Beijing, #HongHao presents his recent works, including the latest series "Edged" and "Everchanging Appearance," revealing the thread of spontaneous growth in the artist’s work.-The visual source for this exhibition can be traced back to the contemporary social visual archive the artist has been building since 2001 with his "My Things" series, in which every day for twelve years, the artist made a record of the everyday objects around him, scanning and categorizing them indiscriminately, and through this process of abstraction, decoupling the objects from the system of value attached to them. After this, the artist carried out multiple steps of further decoupling, causing the still vaguely recognizable outlines of the objects to disappear beneath the surface of the paintings, leaving only abstract edges and shapes.-As this massive visual archive of consumer society progressed over a decade, it was transformed into a creative vocabulary unique to the artist. Curated by Arne Glimcher, the founder of #PaceGallery, the exhibition evolved from the critically successful presentation of the series at Pace in London in 2017, and will be on view in New York through June 29, 2018. #theatresofmemory-The "Théâtres de mémoire" is one of #Dubuffet’s most important series of works, and contains some of the largest paintings he ever made. The series, which Dubuffet started at age 74, also marked a new technique for him and a redefinition of his art. Each work is a vast picture made up of smaller paintings, which the artist cut out and glued to the canvas. He began his process on his studio floor, where he would arrange different combinations of cut-out figures and scenes. He then used magnets to pin the paper or canvas to the wall, allowing him to easily replace one element with another, and to overlap segments until he reached his final compositions—some spanning up to nearly eight feet high by twelve feet wide.-The paintings depict abstractions, landscapes, scribbles and figures from Dubuffet’s mind. For Dubuffet, each of the "Théâtres de mémoire" is a collection of actual places and scenes that crowd and conflict in our memory.
