LE GUESS WHO ?
Utrecht, Netherlands | November 8th - 11th 2018

We've been itching to check out Le Guess Who for years, and this year Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother) from Irreversible Entanglements was invited by the festival to guest curate a number of shows (alongside Shabaka Hutchings and Devendra Banhart, the other guest curator), so we figured that's enough excuse to shoot up to Utrecht after our Paris hangs. Performers for this year include Art Ensemble of Chicago, Nicole Mitchell, Sons of Kemet, Circuit des Yeux, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Hello Skinny, Comet is Coming, Meridian Brothers, Brian Case's FACS, and, of most obvious relevance to this announcement:

November 11th - Irreversible Entanglements featuring Pat Thomas -  the Philly/DC/NY free jazz collective (Camae Ayewa - vocals, Keir Neuringer - sax, Aquiles Navarro - trumpet, Luke Stewart - bass, Tcheser Holmes - drums) revive a collaboration that was born earlier this year at London's Cafe Oto, with special guest pianist Pat Thomas.

November 17th - Makaya McCraven @ AB Club - plus DJ sets by David Allen & Scottie McNiece

November 18th - Ben LaMar Gay @ AB Club - plus DJ sets by David Allen & Scottie McNiece

EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL
London, England | November 21st - 24th 2018

As 'jazz' evolves, so do the looks of these presentations... and the 2018 London Jazz Festival is another major script-flipping program this year, under the curatorial guidance of new festival director Pelin Opcin. The tail end of their 10 days of programming will be the culmination of our IARC EU campaign for Fall 2018. Two major things of note here:

November 21st & 22nd - Jaimie Branch's Fly or Die residency @ Cafe Oto - Jaimie Branch and her A-team (Lester St Louis on cello, Chad Taylor on drums, and Jason Ajemian on bass) engage in two nights of performance at London's legendary creative music hub Cafe Oto, and International Anthem engineers (The Daves) will be on-site to capture (what we're hoping will be) material for a forthcoming Fly or Die sequel.

November 24th - CHICAGOxLONDON (redux) featuring Makaya McCraven + Nubya Garcia + guests @ Hackney Arts Centre - a big one at the brand new, rehabbed Hackney venue EartH co-presented by Serious, International Anthem & Total Refreshment Centre, featuring both Makaya McCraven & Nubya Garcia's bands, followed by a sure-to-be-epic improvisation session featuring guests that include Jaimie Branch, Junius Paul, Shirley Tetteh, and more TBA. Plus DJ sets by Tina Edwards, Lexus Blondin & Scottie McNiece before/between/after performances. An epic finish!

"Chicago-reared, NYC-based trumpeter Jaimie Branch has played with the likes of Spoon, TV on the Radio and Belle Orchestre. After 10 years of being down to jam with jazz, post-rock and doom metal groups, Branch steps out with her assured debut album, Fly or Die. Sounds like: Art Ensemble of Chicago jamming at an art-punk loft." – Rolling Stone Magazine, 10 New Artists You Need to Know Now, June 2017

"Few records this year packed as much rhythmic punch as this Chicago trumpeter’s debut album. Fly or Die most certainly flies, and ascends higher whenever Branch moves into a frantic solo." – Los Angeles Times

"She plays like someone making a getaway, fueled by adrenaline and on the run." – Aquarium Drunkard

"A quintet of vocalist Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother), alto saxophonist Keir Neuringer, trumpeter Aquiles Navarro, double bassist Luke Stewart and drummer Tcheser Holmes, they stand up to what’s wrong, voice and instruments in unity and channeling a rage that won’t be contained." – Bird Is The Worm

“This is jazz that sounds like it’s being played at the front of a parade of extremely pissed-off protesters." – Stereogum

“It’s a harrowing listen, and one of the most powerful and relevant works of art you’ll encounter...” – The Quietus

"
If improvisation is a science, McCraven is one of the finest in the lab." - Bandcamp

"McCraven is a beat architect whose craft is threefold. He’s a drummer and bandleader first, but his voice doesn’t really materialize until after sounds are laid to tape." - Pitchfork

"Ben LaMar Gay’s music is full of wonder. It takes in the endearing glow of the natural world, plus the endless variety of man-made refractions, and then processes those beams and flickers into something strikingly original." – AFROPUNK

"There is no one universe for Ben LaMar Gay, he just sonic booms from one sound to another." – NPR MUSIC
