KK's Greatest Motivation

Hey Y’all!

My name is KK Barbour and this is my junior year here as a member of the women’s basketball team. Time is certainly flying!! Over the past three years, I have gained so much knowledge and wisdom from the game of basketball, my peers, and most importantly, God.

This year has certainly been a crazy and exciting one from our first annual team retreat in the woods (with no cellphones), to being stuck on a plane and airport for about five hours and having to drive thirteen hours to Missouri, and scoring 105 points in our last game ... but that’s just to name a few things. The team we have this year is so special due to the fact that we all get along so well and everyone shares the desire to win. Through the ups and downs of what a Division I basketball season entails, we all have each others' backs at the end of the day. Some incredible blessings and achievements are headed our way and 2018 is definitely our year.

Every year we are given the task to write a blog in order to share it with our friends, family, and fans to keep them updated and give them some inside scoop. This year’s blog is dedicated to my amazing family. My family is my greatest motivation that I carry out with me on the court. Growing up, I have always had a really close immediate family. My mom, Crystal, and my aunt, Kristie, raised me and my cousins basically as siblings.
We spend every holiday, vacation, and family gathering together. At home, I have my mom and my little brother, Malik. I also have an older brother named Kevin who is a quarterback at the University of Richmond. My aunt, uncle Caleb, and cousins Tical, Caylee, Laveah, and Gunnar make up the other part of my family. I can always count on seeing these faces in the crowd cheering on the Lady Flames at every home game and a few close away games. My family, especially my mom, has sacrificed so much for me to get where I am now. The money spent on gear, the hours spent in the gym, road trips to tournaments, making good grades to be eligible for the NCAA, college camps and visits, and a lot of other things would not be possible without my amazing mom and support of my loving family.

I am very blessed to have the family that I have. I am so grateful for them and everything that they do for me. They are who I look up to the most and rely on daily. In closing, I want to share a Bible verse that carries me along this crazy journey of being a Division I student athlete. In Deuteronomy 31:6 it says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” We live in a crazy, unpredictable world that can be so easy to fall into the hands of the devil. In trying times, we should always remember that God will never leave our side. God did not create us to be fearful and timid but instead He created us to be strong and powerful against those who are in opposition to what we are trying to achieve.

Go Flames!
