"WHAT IS A MAGICAL UNICORN?" YOU ASK. MAGICAL UNICORNS ARE AMAZING DOGS WHO, FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER, HAVE SIMPLY BEEN OVERLOOKED AT CROWDED SHELTERS.

They're dogs who may not run to the front of their kennel to greet visitors, so they're less frequently seen. Maybe they're shy, or they just don't do well in the stressful shelter environment. Perhaps they have a treatable medical condition and just need someone to give them a little extra care. Whatever the reason, these dogs find themselves running out of time at the shelter. Previously overlooked, once you get these Magical Unicorns out of the shelter and into a loving foster or forever home, they reach their full potential as happy, loving companions!

Shuttermutt Photo is excited to support our friends at A Purposeful Rescue with a pet calendar contest! All proceeds from this fundraiser will assist A Purposeful Rescue with with their 100% volunteer-run efforts to rescue, foster, and re-home dogs in the Los Angeles area, including funding the rescue dogs’ increasingly expensive medical care. Entry and voting takes place from April 22 - May 24, 2024. You can vote for your dog to win a photoshoot with us and a spot as a featured pet of the month in our 2025 pet photo calendar! There will also be mini-contest prizes each week donated by our generous sponsors.

All proceeds from the sale of the calendar along with entry and voting fees throughout the photo contest will assist A Purposeful Rescue in saving more “magical unicorns” from L.A.’s over-crowded shelters. By participating in this contest, whether voting for your own dog or a friend’s, you’ll make a difference in the life of a dog, plus get the chance to have a Shuttermutt Photo experience! A real win-win, right?

Check out the official contest website. And sign up for our calendar contest email list (below) to get timeline updates, reminders of weekly mini-contests, and special promos.

FOSTER FOR LIFE LAAS

We’re proud to announce a foster support program for LA City fosters. This pilot program is in response to the capacity crisis. Every shelter is at or over capacity. This means doubling up kennels, this means making space. We’re teaming up with our friends at Blue Man Dog, I Stand With My Pack, and The Real Bark to help folks willing to foster for the city by providing supplies, training, guidance, and adoption promotion using our resources, trainers, and networks. Dogs are hand-selected, and chosen for their sociability, temperament, health, and suitability for adoption. For more info and to apply, please click here.

MAGICAL UNICORNS IN THE PRESS

Our little pint-sized pop tart MU Gemma Toothpick was featured on people pets!

Nobody likes a complainer. And even though Gemma Toothpick has every reason to be one, those surrounding the tiny injured pup say she's been an “amazing patient” throughout the medical ordeal that will fix her two broken front legs.According to A Purposeful Rescue of Los Angeles, the 13-week-old puppy, who is shown wearing a pair of un-fur-gettable pink casts on Facebook, is a “pint-sized superhero” who has dealt with her extensive surgery with grace and calm.“She needs our help,” said a post shared on the rescue's Facebook page on Monday, when the Chihuahua came into its care. “She's only 13 weeks old and has two broken front legs … This will not be a cheap surgery. If you have some extra change in your pockets we would be grateful.” During pricey surgery (believed to cost close to $4,300), a plate was put in one leg and the other was splinted. The leggy girl came through surgery with flying colors — pink to be exact, the color of her casts — and the rescue shared a video of the sweet baby walking around just a few hours afterward (set with perfection to The Proclaimers' song, “I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)”). “She is an absolute doll,” says one update. “The staff at ASEC were carrying her around like a baby and all said what an amazing little patient she was! She's home now and headed to her foster tonight! We wanted to thank you all so much for your love, support, and donations for this little pop tart!”
