Coral reefs are the primary ecosystems in the Maldives. 🇲🇻 The Maldives’ coral reef systems rank as the seventh largest globally, spanning around 8,900 km2, making it the fifth most diverse reef ecosystem in the world.

Endangered Species Day is a day of recognising what we have before it’s gone. Should be every day 🙏🏼

As a shark research NGO based in the Maldives, we take this day to highlight some of the threatened shark species and their relatives that inhabit Maldivian waters and have found refuge in the Maldives shark Sanctuary – a place defying the trend of shark decline and targeted fisheries in the rest of the Indian Ocean.

The Maldives is home to around 40 shark species, of which each species has its own unique biological and behavioural characteristics. With over 100 million sharks a year being killed globally by commercial fisheries alone, it’s of utmost urgency and importance that we focus on further protecting these beautiful creatures. Sharks have roamed the seas long before the dinosaurs, and we all have a responsibility to ensure their future.
