Gwyn Ardyth Art Studio

Welcome to my art studio in a wooded Welsh valley.

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science.”

My art practice is completely inspired by this natural and wild environment, and the special unseen energies that permeate this place. The trees, the light and the shadow, the spaces between, the seasonal cycles, the ever flowing water and frequencies all become part of my work.

Roads at Dusk

I am currently working on a series of paintings and studies inspired by driving home through my local country roads at dusk, when the last light of the day barely remains. This liminal time for me is supercharged and magical, like standing on the threshhold between worlds. See my Paintings on Paper gallery.

Orbs & Intuition Paintings

Circles, orbs and portals are appearing in my latest paintings with more frequency. This painting ‘In the Night Garden’ is part of this series, featured in my Paintings on Paper gallery.

Landscape Notes

A series of miniature abstract ‘landscape notes’ as a response to the the wooded valley where I live. Painted quickly with the immediacy of gestural mark-making, these small paintings hold many rich layers.

Cosmic Tree Series

Painted during lockdown 2020, this series of 12 small paintings explores the concept of the Cosmic Tree. The idea came to me in a dream that the tree holds the whole universe within its form – a macrocosm within a microcosm.

*In-spire : from the Latin inspirare, literally to ‘breathe into’ as a divine source imparts truth or an idea to someone.

About my work

My artwork is inspired by the woodland landscape – trees, leaf forms, natural patterns, water, light and shadow that can be seen and sensed. I am a sensitive and an intuitive person by nature, so I paint what I am feeling and what I am sensing in the landscape. My personal art practice is not a thinking process but a feeling one. My work is a response to the energies within the landscape, especially the trees and woodland that support a myriad of wildlife in the peaceful secluded valley where I live. Colour, energy, light and shadow are evoked through a layering process using oil, acrylic and gloss paint, inks, pastels and mixed media on paper or canvas, or created through a digital process I call ‘digital montage’.

Bio

Born in the USA, I studied art in California, New York and England, achieving an HND in Fine Art at Weston College, Somerset (2003) and a BA(Hons) Degree in Drawing and Applied Art at the University of the West of England, Bristol (2006).  I now live and work in a secluded wooded valley in West Wales, UK.

I’ve been painting and exhibiting art for more than 25 years.  I’ve taught art workshops to adults and young teens, and believe everyone has an innate creative ability which can heal and inspire.
