The bats poured out of the houses like a dark river, headed straight for the trees where the spectators waited. The bats shot around the edge of the trees and disappeared briefly, then reappeared in the distance, ascending up into the clouds.
About half a million bats live in the largest occupied bat houses on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida. There are two barns and one house on the property. Tara McCarty, our news design director, was 20 years old and in college when her mom sent her a copy of Taylor Swift’s Fearless. Clearly something stuck with her because she’s spent the better part of 3 years tallying, counting and cross-referencing 99 of her songs and, in the process, created a database of 5,270 lines of her lyrics. And what has she learned? Well, for starters, Taylor’s most used word is “know” — how fitting. Check out what else Tara found out here.

Frito, the seahorse has been released. Clearwater Marine Aquarium rescued and rehabilitated its smallest rescue yet: Frito, the tiny seahorse. Frito, a female lined seahorse, was rescued Sun., June 10 off Redington Shores, FL by local resident Dawn McCartney and her two daughters. We are saddened by the news of Anthony Bourdain’s death this morning in France. He was 61. The celebrity chef, author and television star was in Strasbourg to film an upcoming segment of his CNN series “Parts Unknown.” A photo from the Times archives shows Bourdain stopping for lunch at Tampa restaurant La Teresita in 2002 while promoting one of his books.
