REMEMBERING JOSEPHINE MASSARELLA

We are deeply saddened to announce the peaceful passing of filmmaker and long-time CFMDC member Josephine Massarella on June 22, 2018, surrounded by family and friends. Josie was an active member of the filmmaking community in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario, particularly at Factory Media Centre  and LIFT. In addition to making work, she shared her passion for film by programming screenings and teaching courses in filmmaking and cinema studies.

Josie’s films include 165708 (2017), Night Stream (1996), and No. 5 Reversal (1989). They have screened at festivals worldwide and won numerous awards, most notably Best Experimental Film at the 2018 Ann Arbor Film Festival for 165708. Working primarily in 16mm, Josie loved the materiality of analogue film and experimented with single-frame cinematography and chemical processes. Her beautiful films offer a sensitive and thoughtful approach to the world, exploring themes of vision, light, nature, and time. Apart from her work, Josie will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and enthusiastic support for her fellow artists.

There will be a retrospective screening of Josephine's work on
Friday, August 10, 7pm at Factory Media Centre, 228 James St N, Hamilton.
