Identity and mental health are crucial in Viola’s work as a multidisciplinary / Transfronteriza artist. Based in Tijuana/San Diego, her work looks at a daily confrontation about being born and raised a long side a wall that divides two very different worlds. With that said, she’s interested in performance and what the body’s affective response looks like through art: self-portraiture, wearable sculptures, painting, photography, video and mix-media collage are most of the mediums she works with.
Her practice centers on a fascination with connection, monstrosity and metamorphosis. Grounded in the belief that art heals and that creativity is a physical act, her work returns always to the source: the body. With this body she finds stories and by sharing those stories she hopes to empower individuals and communities to navigate their own healing journey towards a more peaceful and sane way of life. Her work also aims to explore the intersection between feminine narratives (aesthetics), social media empowerment and daily ritual allowing to flow freely through the mind and body . In conclusion the work is intentionally creating awareness in every unique piece.
