Your muscles are made what we call proteins, proteins are made of tiny chemical structures called amino acids. These amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Proteins are vitally essential to our bodies because they provide the structures for all living things.

Every living organism from the tiniest microorganism to the largest animals on earth, are composed of protein. Next to water protein makes up the majority of our body weight. In the human body, protein structures make up the muscles, tendons, ligaments, organs, nails, hair, and many vital body fluids, and even in the growth of bones.

The enzymes essential for digesting food, stimulating the brain, cellular energy production, and the repair of the cell are in fact proteins. These energized protein molecules are a catalyst - substances that accelerate and precipitate the hundreds of thousands of the biochemical reactions in the body that control life processes.

Without proteins, life as we know it would not exist, even if we had sufficient amounts of vitamins, minerals, water, and other nutrients. Proteins help to regulate the body’s water balance and help to maintain our PH levels.

Fluids like blood and lymph travel throughout the tissues of the body, a deficiency in protein can upset this balance of fluids causing edema, swelling of body parts from injury or inflammation.

Amino acids are vital for the enabling of vitamins and minerals to perform their jobs correctly. For example, a deficiency in essential amino acids methionine and taurine has been linked to allergies and autoimmune disorders. More than 50 million Americans have experienced various types of allergies each year. Allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. Low levels in the amino acid tyrosine may lead to iron deficiency, a common condition seen in women in recent years, which supplementation of essential amino acids could possibly help aid.

Branched-chain amino acids are big in the bodybuilding world because we have been told they “help build muscle.” BCAA’s for short contains the necessary amino for protein synthesis as well as provide energy directly to the muscle, however recent studies show that even with the supplementation of BCAA’s if the body is deficient in essential amino acids it will take from the branched-chain amino.

Inside each muscle cell, our DNA holds the code to tell our bodies how to make that cell's protein. As mentioned earlier proteins are made from the building blocks of amino acids, each protein is made of a specific group of arranged amino acids. It is the particular amino acids present and the way they are linked together in a sequence that makes up the various tissues (muscle) of our bodies their unique functions and characteristics.

The proteins in our bodies are not actually obtained directly from the diet, but rather, dietary protein is broken down into its constituent amino acids. Only after amino acids are present from the digestion of proteins we can use them to rebuild structures inside our bodies. Thus, it’s the amino acids, not the protein, that are the essential nutrients for building muscle and all other tissues.

There are approximately 28 commonly known amino acids that are combined in various ways to make up hundreds of different types of proteins in all living things like protein. The body can actually make its own amino acids via the liver these 11 or so are called nonessential because if the body needs them it will just make them. There are however 9 amino acids that the body CANNOT make, thus they are essential to obtain only from our diet. These are Essential amino acids. 

The essential amino acids that must enter the body through diet or supplementation are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine which can be found in supplements like Nurabio Natural EAA’s.

The metabolic process of breaking down digested proteins and reassembling them as amino acids to make proteins like muscle are continuous. When we need more cells (muscle) the body produces more proteins for them. Should the body become depleted (like from strenuous exercise aka bodybuilding) it would not be able to produce the proteins that require those amino acids. An inadequate supply of even one essential amino acid can hinder the synthesis of muscle and reduce body levels of necessary proteins.

So why should we even use supplements? Why not just eat a bunch or protein?

Excess protein puts undue stress on your kidneys and liver because they are left with the job of processing the waste products from protein metabolism. About half of all amino acids in dietary protein are converted into glucose by the liver to be utilized for energy to the cells. This process results in the waste product ammonia, a toxin to the human body. The body protects itself by turning the ammonia into a less toxic compound called aria, which is carried into the bloodstream, filtered out by the kidneys, and excreted.

In summary even if you eat a well-balanced diet that contains enough protein, the essential amino acids must be present simultaneously in the diet in order for the amino acids to be utilized, otherwise, the body remains in a negative nitrogen balance, causing problems ranging from indigestion to depression and lack of muscle growth. When the brain senses a lack in essential amino acids, it immediately sends a signal to your muscles to release some of their tissue which is NOT what you want as bodybuilding or athlete. Sooner or later, this lack of intake will become apparent as some type of physical disorder.
