To give this Jamaica Plain master bedroom a modern, fresh feel, architectural designer Dana Arazi-Levine used the room’s generously sized windows as a guide. “The original design ignored the beautiful, forest-like greenery surrounding the house,” Arazi-Levine says. “I highlighted it.” To start, she painted the walls Benjamin Moore White Dove, which she describes as “crisp and cozy.” The swooping brass task lights on either side of the bed, which she chose based on sculptural sconces the homeowner had fallen in love with, add even more visual interest. “There was no room to mount them on the wall, but these swing-arm lamps set the same mood,” says the designer. “I like when I’m able to find a creative solution.”
1 A faux-angora chair paired with a brass table is a perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail while preparing for an evening out. “It adds an element of mystery to the bedroom,” Arazi-Levine says.
2 Simple canvas curtains on rubbed-bronze rods frame the view without overpowering the windows, Arazi-Levine’s favorite feature.
3 The tiered drum pendant light from Rejuvenation adds just enough personality. “I didn’t want it to be a focal point,” Arazi-Levine says. “It’s soft, modern, and effortless.”
4 Because the king-size bed — a must for the client — takes up a good portion of the space, the designer chose a simple tufted headboard in a neutral shade. “The slight wing detail relays a sense of shelter,” she says.
5 Arazi-Levine appreciates the juxtaposition of the sharp-edged nightstands and the curved forms of the lamps. “They’re like a well-matched couple with different personalities but shared values,” she says.
6 Accessories on the bed take color cues from the vintage-style area rug. Says Arazi-Levine, “Bohemian touches break the symmetry of the architecture and furnishings and make the room feel lived in.”
