Designer Allison Mattison, owner of design shop Trellis Home in Hingham, created her home office in an unexpected spot — the side entry. Although the Garrison Colonial has a mudroom off the garage, the family needed a spot for the shoes and garments they shed when they enter on foot. Since it’s on the perimeter of the kitchen — the heart of a home with two children in elementary school — positioning a home office here made sense. While tall cabinets provide storage for paper towels and the vacuum cleaner, drawers alongside the desk house business files and a charging station. Shelves hold design books that are frequently sources of inspiration. Mattison says, “It’s basically in the kitchen, but it’s my own space, and it works.”
1 The Addison Weeks malachite-and-brass drawer pulls and door handles are like jewelry. “I knew I’d use them before I even designed the built-ins,” Mattison says.
2 The oversize tassel is part of the collection Mattison designed last fall in India with Pyar&Co. “Bright colors make the traditional accent fresh and modern,” she says.

4 The color scheme of the Goa wallpaper by Thibaut incorporates navy from the family room and Kelly green from the kitchen. “The pattern isn’t new, but I never tire of it,” says Mattison.

6 The hues in the China Seas fabric on the cushion are softer versions of the shades in the wallpaper. “We pulled the less obvious colors — light blue from the leaves and lime from the wing of the birds — so the room wouldn’t feel oversaturated,” Mattison says.
7 The lacquered faux-bamboo Bungalow 5 chair provides a fun pop of navy and nods to the chinoiserie-style accessories, including vintage ginger jars and white marble foo dogs.
