The restaurant world is a fickle one: chefs come and go, menus change and evolve, new places open and old favorites close. Sadly, one of the stalwarts, which had been a harbinger of a new wave of fine dining for Boston, has announced that after New Year’s Eve dinner service they are shuttering their doors.

L’Espalier has enjoyed a 40-year run as the pinnacle of haute cuisine in our city. Where so many restaurants fail to keep up with the ever-changing tastes of its patrons, L’Espalier remained on the cutting edge. From ushering in a new era of modern fine dining to the city in 1978, to Chef Frank McClelland leading the charge for farm-to-table dining before that was even an industry term, L’Espalier was able to wow guests night after night.

So many of us have celebrated special occasions there—birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, promotions—L’Espalier has seen it all and somehow managed to make us all feel special every time.

The last night of service will be December 31. And in true McClelland fashion, the Chef has put together a New Year’s Eve menu that that honors all those who have contributed to the restaurant’s longevity and success in impressing guests year after year.
