Capturing the Magic- Classroom Tech for Digital Storytelling & More
My students need 6 iPads with protective cases to document their artwork, create digital portfolios to share with families, and utilize 21st-century art and technology processes.
I recently made the difficult decision to move to a school closer to home. Last school year, I poured my heart and soul into transforming my classroom into a safe and welcoming environment for students to express themselves. I am excited do it all over again this school year for 400 new artists!
I now teach at a Title I school in Florida where over 70 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
I aim to provide a wide variety of art media for my students to explore, many for the very first time. Many students are considered homeless, some staying in hotels or with family and friends. Despite the hardships and challenges that my students may be faced with outside of the classroom, my school community works hard to provide a meaningful learning experience for our students. I provide them the means to express themselves through their artwork.
With your help, I hope to create an environment and lifelong love of learning that inspires creativity inside the classroom and out. I aim to make school "home" for my students- one where they can utilize resources they may not have at home. Thank you for your support!
My Project
These iPads will allow my students to document their artwork digitally. They will learn how to use apps to digitize their art and about the countless job opportunities for artists in the digital world. Last school year I was blessed to have a set of tablets funded through DonorsChoose.org and witnessed the benefits of technology in the art room firsthand. I was able to expand upon our curriculum in so many ways that benefited my students. Unfortunately, I had to leave the class set of tablets behind when I left the school.
Graphic design, photography, and animation are 21st-century art forms that my students have not been able to experience due to our lack of classroom technology.
The addition of STEAM tools enhances critical thinking, collaboration, and curiosity in the art room.
I plan to record lesson videos/demonstrations and utilize the "flipped classroom" technique with addition of the 7 iPads with shockproof/waterproof cases- students can use the tablets to watch demonstrations at their own pace while creating, step by step.
Students will learn that art and design are an integral part of many subject areas. My students are focusing on collaboration this school year, often working in teams to create. Each team will share a tablet and collaborate while using apps such as Kahoot to think critically and work together to produce answers.
This set of iPads will allow for varied structures of learning in the art room while integrating STEAM. Students can expand on their original ideas by researching and referencing photos to design works of art, making their ideas come to life. They can take responsibility for materials, sign their work with the Adonit Pixel, and return their tablets to the charging station after use. This grant would allow them to truly explore and create!
