Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very near and dear to my heart along with the communities they hail from. Our students come from primarily east oakland and are eager to be in an environment of support. Our kids have vastly different educational experiences, some great, some traumatic and some in the middle. Our goal is to meet them where they are at and shift what they think they can achieve in the educational system.
Our kids also really love the arts and are so excited to create pieces that speak them.
They also love trying new forms of art and it is my job to provide them with an eclectic art experience. I love my students and want them to leave middle school having had the chance to express themselves in a variety of ways. They are great kids and deserve an equally great art education.
My Project
Our 6th graders will be going on a journey in to the history of various religions around the world. We will be learning and reflecting on how we as a nation honor some religions and build obstacles for others. Students will be creating art showcasing how love can conquer hate through the art of printmaking.
Activist artist in the bay area use printmaking as the main way to get their message across to a wide audience.
I want my students to use the tools activist use to make a change in the community. Using the tools of the trade will be a powerful experience!
