SHORT FILM: DEMME

Directors Statement

This is a film I never knew I wanted to make. I'm not typically a horror director, I came up with the concept of a vegan becoming a cannibal because I thought it was funny. I like some of the old films like Texas Chainsaw and Evil Dead but never enough to warrant myself a fan of the horror genre. So why am I making a horror film? First, because that's the script that Harry (screenwriter) gave me and it's GOOD. But second and most importantly, I realized that this film is one I've ALWAYS wanted to make.

Some of my favorite films/shows have strong horror influences without directly being considered part of the genre. For example, No Country For Old Men is never considered a horror film, but it is hard to consider Anton being anything other than a horror movie's monster in a crime thriller setting. Pulp Fiction dedicates one of the stories multiple climaxes to the horror genre by having Butch and Marsellus being locked up by a corrupt cop, a shop owner and a gimp.

With movies like those being some of my favorite, I think that's why I was so happy about what the script turned out to be- because like I said, this concept was funny to me and that's it. Harry took my concept, ran with it and turned it into a film I would want one of my favorite directors to make. That's the reason I'm making this film, because the Demme is the EXACTmovie I have always wanted to make.

Writer: Harrison Giza (@harveypizza)

Harrison Giza is the Press and Social Media Content Coordinator for MËNAJI Men’s Skincare as well as writer and editor for Punchland, Emcee Network, MOD Magazine, and a handful of online publications. Formerly, Harrison worked at Bad Hat Harry Productions (filmmaker Bryan Singer’s studio) as a Writer and recently left his tenure at Fox Studios as Script Supervisor. Having been creating and brainstorming ever since he was in fourth grade, the chance to write the script for Demme ignited that same spark of excitement he had when he was younger. Most of the time, however, he’s cooking spicy chicken in the kitchen or arguing with his girlfriend about how he doesn't do the dishes properly.

Producer/ Assistant Director: Joe Richard (@josephcharlesrichard_)

Joe Richard is a student at University of Rhode Island studying Communications and History with hopes of one day being a screenplay writer. Joe loves writing, but more importantly enjoys the entire process of storytelling, its unlimited potential, and the ability to let everything go. Joe brings out elements in characters that haven't been discovered and looks to get the most from any script. He intends to work hard on the project and having so much fun doing so.

Where The Money Goes!
BUDGET

MAKEUP/ SFX/ HAIR- EST. $1140 (19%)

Since this is a horror there will be some blood and gore. Our amazing makeup artist Bianca is going to need a large amount of it for certain scenes so a good portion of the budget will be going to help make her job easier!

PROPS- EST. $300 (5%)

A lot of the props we will have available to us but we still need some essential props (ex. fake knives and hatchet-murderers gotta kill ya know?) to make this film as real as possible.

EQUIPMENT- EST. $1200 (20%)

The film itself will be shot on a Sony a7rii we have available to us. The camera body is not what's important, the lens is (well it's the people behind it but the lens helps!). Along with renting some high quality cinema lenses we also need lighting, audio and other camera equipment.

LOCATION- EST. $300 (5%)

We will have to rent out time in certain locations for certain scenes.

POST- PRODUCTION- EST. $900 (15%)

Some things included here are any voice-over and post-effect work that needs to be done.

CAST CREW ACCOMMODATIONS- EST. $900 (15%)

This includes transportation, food and any other accommodations our cast and crew need during the days we are shooting.

CONTINGENCY- EST. $600 (10%)

To be safe, we figured we should set aside some extra funding in case we run into any issues during filming.

EVEN IF WE DO NOT REACH OUR GOAL WE PLAN ON USING THE MONEY THAT WE DO RAISE AND MAKE THE FILM WITH WHAT WE HAVE.
The Impact
Though it is not the sole purpose of the film - which to be honest, is to be thoroughly entertained;  it addresses depression, mental and physical health, as well as the idea of people struggling to get through therapy. This film does not aim to show you how to deal with these issues but instead shows people that others can be sick in ways you may not know.

At its heart, this project is purely an opportunity for us to make a short film with the intention of submitting it to festivals. Alex and Harry have spent multiple years creating together and have taken the likes of Bianca, Joe and Tyler on as consistent creative partners. We want the opportunity to show that we are capable of making films and making them great.
Risks & Challenges
There will always be risk when investing in a film. There's even more of a risk when investing in people with little experience in filmmaking. Despite not having as much experience as others, this team is dedicated to the project and will solve any problem that comes our way. We are determined to make anyone involved in 'Demme' proud to say they were a part of it.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you can't donate (or maybe already have) please share this across any social media platform or to anyone you might think would be interested in investing!
