On the last day of AAPI Heritage Month, I am thankful for the recent moments of representation and empowerment I have witnessed. At the 30th anniversary of Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) we were honored to have President Biden deliver the keynote at our gala, acknowledging the many contributions of the AAPI community. At the business summit of National ACE Biden Administration leaders like Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves and Under Secretary of Commerce for Minority Business Development Donald Cravins, Jr., Esq. praised the contributions of AAPI businesses leaders to the global economy.  At the 50th anniversary of the Korean congregation at Market Square Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg, PA - a ministry conceived by my parents - representatives from Office of Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr. and Patty Kim presented the church with resolutions commending the church for its ministry to immigrants and for creating a multicultural community that enriches all Pennsylvanians. This recognition is especially meaningful for our community because we are often overlooked and invisible. Let's not limit our inclusion efforts to just these commemorative months. In this week's new episode, host Paul Butler speaks with R. Seth Williams, who was elected the first African-American District Attorney in the history of Philadelphia. He ran afoul of the law and was indicted on corruption charges, spending three years in federal prison. Upon his release, Williams started a long and difficult trek to regain elements of his old life and to build a new one. He eventually began working with the PHILADELPHIA ANTI-DRUG ANTI-VIOLENCE NETWORK, and their program of deploying “credible messengers” to the most distressed neighborhoods in the city. These team members respond to shooting incidents to support victims and their families and canvass the streets to head off trouble whenever possible. They a have records of violence or incarceration in their own pasts, which grants them their aura of trust and “credibility,” and their imprisoned pasts often make them uniquely qualified for their work. Returning Citizens is a docuseries that focuses on the challenges faced by the formerly incarcerated. America jails more people than any other country in the history of the world. For many, just one arrest is enough to get caught up in the system. When they’re released back into society after their debt has been paid, often, they are offered no opportunities and no hope. But there are some who do break through, who do get a hand, who do get help. Returning Citizens tells their story.
