I have lots and lots of things in work these days: 1. I’m working on a large secret project and I need to come back to it every day for a few weeks. This is how I can control my colors and get to work easily each day. 2. A 24x24” canvas that I’ve reworked a few times. It’s now waiting for the image to emerge, in the vein of my accordion book paintings, 3. The beginning of a small painting of a family on wood inspired by vintage photos. I love to imagine the lives these people had that are now either over or close..4. From my collection of vintage photos 5.pink side of accordion book, 6. Green side 7. One little sketch from my next book!

Eu finalmente terminei.
To doida pra fazer o próximo, no mais, essa foto não consegue captar as cores que coloquei e isso me deixa meio decepcionada.
Enfim, é isso, uh

I thought today would be as good a day as any to say hi and introduce myself! This is me in my home studio, I’m a full-time freelance illustrator living in Rhode Island. I went to RISD and occasionally teach there, which is super fun. I have a 4-year-old son on the autism spectrum who is the best kiddo on the planet (that’s his painting behind me to the left) and a really amazing husband @ericpaulpvd who is an incredibly talented musician, poet and teacher. Oh and I also have two cats that live to harass me all day long. I love working with all kinds of clients - everything from surface design to book covers to editorial. I love painting with gouache and working digitally and combining the two. Bright colors, hand drawn lettering, and cute characters are some of my favorite things to play around with. 🙂 🎨 ✏️ ❤️ 🍷😺 #illustration #allisoncole #allisoncoleillustration #meettheartist #artstudio #paintedillustration #illustratedart #illustrationartist #acrylagouache #illustrationartist #surfacedesign #licensing #artlicensing #catlady
This is going to sound so fucking pretentious, ya’ll, but I really don’t paint for “fun.” I love painting, but usually the process of creating what I consider “art” or “fine art” isn’t a relaxing process. It’s stressful. It requires a lot of thought and concentration. I do other things for “fun”... making weird dolls, knitting, even jewelry. Those are much more relaxing forms of artistic expression, more of a mindless creative flow. It’s more fun, more forgiving, with less at stake in the final product. I don’t have to care about the meaning or the emotional impact. But recently I bought a set of cheap watercolors off Amazon (although some of these are actually acrylic and gouche because I didn’t pay attention to what I was using). I started making these little abstract paintings and really enjoyed myself in that “this isn’t serious art business” way. I would turn out 6 or 7 a night while watching a movie, my own little wine and canvas party at home. I found it to be really therapeutic.
Sometimes I think the act of calling yourself an artist means you stop having fun with art. So non-artists are afraid to make art because they’re worried it won’t be “good enough”, and self-proclaimed artists are afraid to make art because it might not be a masterpiece. Which is silly. Just slop some paint on paper and live, damnit. .
