Story time - my big break. Last year, I received a DM from someone wanting to film a video about my art for a local site. I was surprised - my account had maybe 500 followers at the time. Camera shy, and in cancer treatment, being interviewed felt like too much at first. My husband convinced me to do it anyway. I met videographer @reaapuri, and she did a video shoot in the tiny garage I was using as a studio.
Reaa filmed the paintings I was working on at the time and did a short interview, which I wasn’t well prepared for. I had no idea the video was going to go viral with @insider, with over 6.4M views to date on Facebook. I didn’t get to see it in advance. They focused on my synesthesia, a neurological trait that affects how I perceive color, and the way I’d been fundraising for nonprofits with my art.
Over the next few days, I got hundreds of messages. Nearly every painting I had ever made sold, and I scrambled to ship them all. I was offered an art licensing deal with @lauramercier. I also got messages from other synesthetes across the world, some saying they had been afraid to talk about their experience, and were glad I had shared mine. To this introvert, it was all kind of terrifying, but very exciting.
I was astonished to hear that Reaa was laid off that same week, with less than a day’s notice. My video was one of the last stories she filmed for them. Resilient, she started her own production company at age 23, and gave a TEDx talk recently on her experience. Her company has since filmed for @Nike, and does social justice work such as @standingabovetheclouds. I was thrilled that I could book @breaktide to film my little Metal Leaf Art course.
To say I’m grateful for Reaa and the way our paths crossed is an understatement. Reaa’s work is an example of how storytelling can be used as a powerful force. This changed my life, and gave me a platform to share the causes I care about.
I never imagined any of this, but since then I’ve used this exposure to raise $20K for nonprofits with my art. I feel a responsibility to keep this going and get to $100K. I’m curious, how many of you found me through Reaa’s video

He's a big boy, 11x14 just take up so much room 😅 I went a little crazy on the metallic paint with this piece but it is gorgeous in the sunlight! It reminds me of a bush with fire around it. What do you see If you're interested please feel free to DM me 🤗
