Getting ready to be a bridesmaid for a friend’s wedding this month. Because I was told I needed to have silver shoes under the floor length dress but I hated every pair of painful, tacky, easy to trip in shoes I found that came in silver, I decided to take it upon myself to make a custom pair of shoes for the outfit. I needed a pair of shoes I know I could trust to see me through an entire 24 hours of wedding events, something that conformed to the color palette, something with personality that I didn’t outright hate wearing. I chose to buy a reasonably priced pair of faux leather black boots that I know I could survive in with the addition of some cushy insoles. I then set to work layering a base of white acrylic. Next I layered a light purple acrylic. To that I used a natural sea sponge to gently add areas of darker purple patina. Over the course of a few days, I painted in branching out tree roots working from the center top down with metallic silver acrylic. To that I used aluminum leaf to give it an extra visual pop. When that was set, I layered a clear coat of spray acrylic to protect the surface from the elements. I replaced the black shoe laces with metallic silver cord, and voila! I wanted to have fun, but I needed to keep the crazy to a more discreet location. In the event these shoes peep from the long hem of the dress, only the purple toes will show. My ever so understanding and supportive bride gave me the go ahead to wear them, so I’m good to go! #handpaintedboots #purpleboots #originaldesign #oneofakindshoes #bitchinboots #aluminumleaf #treeroots #purpleandsilver #repurposedshoes #costumedesigner
Costume change! (swipe for the "before," the silvery finish is the "after") Regilding/refinishing frames to better match their paintings is so much fun!
Progress for the day up until my body got a serious case of the flats. I used some old cardboard and cut it into a mat. Wrapped fine gold wire around it, painted it, sanded off the paint on the wires a little, and sprayed gloss on it. Mat done. It’s funky and irregular. I aluminum leafed this paper mâché hand form I bought and layered different blues/purple/black over it. More spray gloss. Hand hammered some squiggle mounts for chains to the back of the hand... screwed and painted the mounts for the chains under the frame... this piece for the 8-Bit Art Show is taking on a life of its own. #blueframe #blueandsilver #aluminumleaf #handmade #handpaintedframe #originalartpiece #workinprogress #wirewrapping #wirewrappedmat #funkymat #whatamimaking #idontknow
Seem to be on a roll with refinishing old frames lately. This one was a vintage gold tone wood frame that needed a little help. I’m changing up the subject for my 8-Bit Art Show piece as my previous one wasn’t speaking to me. Starting with the frame and moving inwards from there. This will be based off the original packaging for the 1980 Atari 2600 “Space Invaders”. So I coated the gold with silver acrylic, aluminum leafed it, then layered three colors of blue over the top. Toned it down with some black acrylic and sprayed some protective gloss over it. Feeling better about this now... #repurposed #refinishedframe #aluminumleaf #blueframe #diditmyself #handmade #repurposedframe #blueandsilver #workinprogress #foranartshow

Third time's the charm for this complex little piece with aluminum leaf. The leiothrix has a deceptively complex feather coloration and along with the patterns of the delicate fern fronds, this was a lot of detail. Having all these elements work together took multiple sessions of painting and re-painting, but I am very happy with the final look, especially the subtle gradient from pale mist to reflective silver leaf for the background. The muted light blue tone helped establish the feeling of being in the mists of the forest and solidified the values I needed for the piece to work. Aluminum leaf can shift colors it has to be applied in areas where the value can change without ruining the piece. In claiming some of those changeable areas as permanently lighter and letting the paint fade out slowly back to metal leaf, the transition ended up looking really cool - especially in person. The transition areas are partially reflective still bringing an extra dimension of dynamic light to the painting. It makes the gradient look very soft. This painting will be for sale at my upcoming solo show at the Lion Coffee Cafe in Oahu during May and June of 2018 unless you want to buy it before the show.
