I worked with a client a few years back, who's business was starting to fall off a cliff.
She couldn't understand what she was doing wrong, or how it could be rectified. Other people within her industry seemed to be doing OK, but her business had started to take a serious nose dive.

I spent a few days working closely with her, reviewing her marketing strategy and generally observing how she ran her business.

And here is the shortened version of what I told her. 'You sound desperate, and it's unattractive'

Every call she made, every email she sent, every post on social media...all smacked of desperation, and people were no longer buying. Confidence in herself was low, confidence from her audience was waning.

When she started that business, she had savings, and then a good return from her biz followed. After making a substantial investment to grow that biz, her funds dramatically drained.
But instead of logically accepting that, and looking forward to where this investment would lead, she was subconsciously panicking, and this was evident in her manner.

When you give out a message of 'please buy my stuff' - nobody wants it. Big discounts, low pricing, undercutting, constant sales pitches, these are all things that can become detrimental to your brand when used incorrectly.

It's the same across life in general. How many relationships do you know of, whereby someone who was obviously desperate to be loved, found their soul mate?

It's simple, human psychology. The more confidence and belief you have in yourself, your work and your business, the less you need to sell it. And, it's THAT magical moment when people wish to buy.
There endith psych 101 for today, now go forth and ooze confidence 🙂 .

Before we go on to discussing websites in the coming posts, let's go back to posts 1.0 and 1.1, where we talked about building relationships, and we used the dog groomer as an example.

So let's finalise this piece, and look at further ways in which we can enhance our relationship with our new collaborative partner.

Let's assume you've discussed a competition or an offer, whereby they will promote you to their audience, and you are now building your audience of targeted followers - lovely.

But what else can you do to maximise this potential? Well, this is one reason why having a website can be helpful to you, and why this method is really helpful for building that localised business.
You could have something like an offers page on your site, where you offer collaborative discounts.
For example, on your site you could have an offer that gives 50% off every 1hr pooch pamper session with your groomer, for every portrait purchased.
The dog groomer could offer customers a 10% off voucher towards a pet portrait, with every session booked. Whatever works for you both.

This is just an example. If you did this a few times with some influential people, who's audiences are ripe for you to tap into, you would probably have to close your commission books and start a wait list - just on this technique alone.

I work with pet portrait artists on their marketing, and this is where my advice is tailored on specific examples. However, most of my marketing tips can be tweaked and adapted to whatever niche you are in.

Next up - The Law of Un-attraction and then some website building goodness!

The best way to get connected to potential partners is through your network. When I say network, I don't mean going to random meet-ups in your community and handing your business card to a bunch of random people. I mean, a network that you build for yourself to help connect you to the people who you want to meet, who⁣
would help your business move forward. Reach out to people you know and ask them if they can⁣
connect you to a specific partnership opportunity that maybe you have in your head, or even connect⁣
you to someone else who could.⁣

Something all artists learn at some point is the importance of good prep work. While there is something to be said about whipping out the brush and simply getting started on a fresh canvas, most work needs a little more preparation than that.

In fact, the more time you spend thinking about composition, values, or the balance of your piece e.g., the better your end result will be.
What I notice a lot is that artists accept this for their artwork, yet they forget all about this rule when they become artist entrepreneurs. In fact, I often find creatives, even seasoned professionals, simply trying to “wing” this whole business thing -- and struggling with the results.

The truth is, running your art business is just like creating your work: You need a vision, a strategy, a plan, and a process – and when things don’t work out, you go back and fix the sketch or the concept.

This is one of most important lessons I try to teach the members of The LAB: To not only think like artists, but to learn to think like an artist entrepreneur.

If you want to go from “winging it” like a hobbyist (which is perfectly fine btw, if that’s what you want), to “planning it” like a pro, then get on The LAB waitlist (link in bio) and be the first to know when doors open for enrollment in September!

Now I want to know the number one difference you noticed when you switched from an artist to an artist entrepreneur mindset!

When you're tracking your results, you can find out where traffic came from to your website. There are a number of different ways that you can track results. So what I would encourage you to do is talk with a partner about how you might⁣
be able to track those kinds of results of a partnership.⁣

Don't mind if I do! ⁣ Have some fun today 😉

Let's talk about hashtags again. In #hashtags Theory 1.1 we looked at some of the reasons why we use them in our posts, so we know they are good for extending our reach to a wider audience.

So which ones do we use?

One of the most common hashtags used on Instagram is #love, it has over 1.3 billion posts. So, if we use a popular tag like that on our posts, we're going to extend to a hUUge audience, right?
Wrong!

Choosing a tag based on popularity, is not the way to go, choosing one that is completely irrelevant to what you are posting, will do far more harm than good. And is actually considered as spam 🤦‍♀️ Think of tags as categories. If you opened a recipe book and looked up a recipe for sponge cake 🍰 you expect to find a cake recipe on the page you turn to. But what if you find a recipe for chicken casserole? 🍗🐔😲 You ask the author why, and they just shrug and say 'Chicken is more popular'🤷‍♀️ But chicken is not what you were looking for, you were looking for cake damnit. So will you buy any more of their recipe books? Nah, thought not!

We want a tag that is relevant to our subject, not over-saturated (although using 1 or 2 is fine) and possibly used by other artists within our niche.

So, a simple way to find a few hashtags is look at some posts from artists you respect and admire. See what posts are most popular and look at the tags they've used. You can click directly on to the tags within their posts to have a look at how popular that tag is.

Anything between the 1,000 - 10,000 is good, up to 50,000 is still fine - start heading into the hundreds of thousands and you're drowning.

I'll be covering how to track and analyse data in further posts, but if you want a simple life & you're not into tracking and testing, just pop some relevant tags onto your posts, aim for between 10-20 & mix it up a bit, try out new ones, and see how that works out.

You've got your picture ready to post, but brain fade is dicking about with you, and you find yourself staring into the distance....thinking of cake 🍰

This is coming up a lot (not the cake, sadly), so let's address it in this tip.
Words do not come naturally to everyone, and this whole process will be more difficult if you force it. You don't have to be some extrovert or big personality, you just need to be yourself.
So grab some paper, and let's talk about your latest piece. I'm going to ask you some questions, and this will nudge your brain into focus mode again. 👉 What or who is the subject? 👉 Is there a story behind it? 👉 What materials have you used? 👉 What size is the piece? 👉 Is that your own ref photo? 👉 Who is it for? 👉 Did they ask you to draw it? 👉 Did they tell you why it was important to them? 👉 Has it taken you a long time? 👉 Have you learnt anything? 👉 Have you enjoyed it? What sort of emotions has it evoked in you? 👉 Would you do anything differently? 👉 What thoughts or plans do you have for your next piece? 👉 Have you named it?
So there's a few little triggers to get you thinking. It doesn't have to be war and peace, just something that your followers can engage with. Make that picture mean something to them, as it does to you.
Try this in real life. Ask a friend to look at some of your work and fire questions at you about it. Make a note of them, so that you can read through them on the days the brain refuses to cooperate.

Once your brain starts thinking, you'll find other questions will pop up and the words will begin to flow.

If you can think of some great questions or have ways you find words, why not pop them below for everyone to share 🙂 .

Day 60 of #100daysmarketingcreatives - Why You Need To Follow The 50 Products Rule
.
In day 58 - rule of 7 I introduced the rule of 7 which is an essential rule to follow when designing your website interface to market your art or craft online. Another rule essential to your strategy is the 50 products rule. You can to sell your art or craft online with less than 50 products but you will find things much harder than they need to be.
.
Each product is an entry point to your shop. The more products the more ways to attract customers as they will find you through your product pages not just your homepage. From there they will visit your homepage and other product pages. With more products you are more likely to be seen rather than be lost in the competition. When planning your keywords and phrases for pages so that you come up in more searches you can use more words and phrases and spread them all around similar products rather than only using a few of them and discarding others. More products also means more news for newsletters and blog posts which will also get you more attention.
.
Many like myself consider 50 products a key point in making your online shop work but, if you can, don't stop there aim for 100 or more and you will really start to see a difference. If you only have a handful of products to start, try listing each colour or variation as a seperate product to make up those numbers initially and watch the interest grow. Click the link in my bio to read more about the rule of 50. How many products do you list?

Marketing Tip:⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Instead of focusing on marketing to an entire audience, market to ONE person. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Write, create, and market as though you are connecting directly with your biggest fan that’s absolutely in love with you and what you do. This creates an environment where your entire audience feels as though you are speaking specifically to them, creating a stronger connection and relationship which in turn increases likelihood for sales. ⁣⁣ ⁣

In a sea of creatives selling multiple products and services, audiences are looking for more than just a product. Stand out from the rest and connect!⁣⁣

I think I had as much fun making the labels for these new boxed card sets as I did painting the originals. Have you discovered Canva.com? Endless possibilities! The tech side of my business is finally starting to be enjoyable. Of course it still took hours to get things set up to print them! My printer is not always in the mood to cooperate.
If you haven't checked out Canva.com, I highly recommend giving it a little peek. I haven't used their printing services yet so if you do, let me know how you like the quality.
These little sets will be available for the first time in August at the Mill Creek Art Walk. 8 cards, 4 unique designs. All in a cute little box. .

Another great image reposted from @tabathagell here. A very talented up and coming #15yearoldartist! Going to enjoy seeing her rocket as she follows the advice in #100daysmarketingcreatives here over the next few years!
.
This is the second piece that I exhibited in the recent High Peak Young Artists exhibition. This art work was the first piece of human portraiture I drew and considered selling. Drawing faces has always been more of a challenge than other subject matters, which drove me to draw faces even more. This piece was spontaneous - I didn't plan in advance and only added elements when I thought they would fit, without using references. In this piece I used black fine-liners which varied in diameter, and prismacolour pencils for the rose. I really enjoyed creating this and hope to draw more pieces with the same techniques

I really enjoyed creating this and hope to draw more pieces with the same techniques . . . . . #artmarketing #artbusiness #artpreneur #businessofart #sellyourartonline #howtosellart #marketingart #artbiztips #artbiz #howtosellartonline #artistuk #britishartist #britishart #modernbritishart #britishartists #ukart #ukartist #ukartists #peakdistrictartist #manchesterart #manchesterartist #manchesterartists #artmanchester #manchesterartprints #manchesterartscene #justacard #youngbritishartists #emergingartists

Day 56 of #100daysmarketingcreatives - Where Are The Best Places To Sell Your Art & Craft Online
.
Many finished #the100dayproject this week. I am a slow finisher. I haven't posted in a week due to numerous distractions and the detail of this post but I believe this material cannot be rushed. It needs to be thorough, well researched and well presented. Hopefully I am achieving that (but please let me know!).
.
So your work sells offline and you want to upscale online so where do you start when there are so many choices - your own website, Etsy, Folksy, NuMONDAY, Artfinder, ArtPal, Fine Art America, Saatchi Art, Not On The High Street, Society 6 to name but a few.
.
Your website needs to be the hub of your web presence. You own it, it is not going to move, the rules aren't going to change (remember Facebook?), you have full control and can direct visitors to everything else from there. Employ a shop on your website and you will get highest margins on your sales but unless you are an SEO, social media and Facebook Ads genius you are missing out on many more sales from other audiences. Once you have established at least a basic website research what other platforms suit you. There are free platforms, high end platforms, online galleries and print on demand services that take the orders, deal with the customer, make the product and ship it for you - you just receive the cheque! Click the link in my bio to read a detailed review of the top sites that I think you should consider at this time and see which is best for you.
.
What 3rd party sites do you use? How does that work for you?

Just back from my mega Europe break, where I had 2 months travelling through Spain, Italy, Switzerland, France and England…⠀
⠀
Here’s one of my favourite spots in busy Brighton. Where the latest installation is the upside down house. Very appropriate for someone who now lives the other side of the world.⠀
⠀
Perhaps this should become my new profile picture? What do you think? Crazy…??⠀
⠀
Back on solid, cold, Perth ground now and going to be posting highlights from my trip.

After months in recovery from 'Chronic Fatigue Syndrome' (and I hate being labelled...), I'm happy to say I'm well enough to start back to business.

As most of you know I had to temporarily shut the doors to everything earlier this year.
But I'm excited to say that I did weeks of research, tried all sorts of strange and wacky treatments, took time for meditation and reflection, rested every day, and completely re-embraced my love of Raw, Plant-Based eating plus those all-important Green Smoothies...and the results speak for themselves... I came from bed-ridden to walking 10,000 steps a day in 4 months!
I will not only be teaching all you lovely Artists and Creatives how to set up and grow a thriving, successful and enjoyable Art Business.... ...but I will also be sharing my top tips to building a healthy lifestyle too.
Get ready to re-charge your Life, Business & Creativity with me this year. Can't wait to have you along for the journey.

I get questions all the time about pricing artwork to sell. In fact, it's such a popular topic that I decided it would be perfect for a masterclass. I reached out to my friend Hanna Lewis to ask her to share her knowledge on the subject with Art Marketing Project Members. ⁣
.⁣
Join the Masterclass on July 9 at noon Mountain Time, and Hannah will answer any pricing questions you have — as well as anything else you might be interested in.⁣
.⁣
You know the drill >> If you're not already inside the Art Marketing Project membership, you'll need to join for $37 to get access to the Masterclass. While you're in there for at least a month, you'll have access to all the past Masterclass replays, the coaching calls, the wonderfully supportive Facebook group, and my course on art marketing.⁣
.⁣ Come on in and check it out — you'll be glad you did! But join now before you forget and miss this masterclass! ⁣

About Hannah: ⁣
Hannah Lewis is the brains behind MindMafia.com, which is a resource for small business owners with big ambitions. ⁣
⁣
⁣
Although Hannah’s corporate clients are some of the largest companies in the world, she’s massively passionate about helping small business people build their tiny empires.⁣
⁣
⁣
Hannah runs Behave London, a behavioral insight agency (in you’ve guessed it) London, England. She conducts research into how people make financial decisions, and her new pricing course, PsychoPricing, shows you how to price all your products and services, once and for all. Using psychology. Like a real grown-up. ⁣

Day 54 of #100daysmarketingcreatives - Contact The Losers Who DIDN'T WIN In Your Prize Draw
.
Over the last few days I have talked about running a prize draw in order to boost mailing list signups at your show or exhibition. This is a really effective method but there are many essential steps not only to grow the list but to make post show sales and start building your relationship with these people.
.
Today I want to talk about contacting your draw losers. This step is essential and must be done QUICKLY after you choose your winner. In it you need to
.
- update them with the draw result
- commiserate with them that they have not won
- cushion the blow with a special offer that they will find hard to resist
.
This is another step in building the relationship with these new contacts. They saw you at the show, you wrote to them a day or two ago and now you are writing a second time so this is the 3rd time you are in their minds. Many marketeers say customers need to see or hear from you at least 3 times to have confidence to buy from your so now is a prime time for this offer and it will work best as soon as possible after the show or exhibition.
.
As ever click the link in my bio for more information on this step including a sample email. Click the 'shows and exhibitions' link at the bottom of that page to see all the steps in the process.
.
Do you write to the draw losers? What do you say? What kind of response do you get?
.

I’ve been noticing a theme lately. As entrepreneurs, we’re told, “Shift your mindset and things will change for the better.” “Sure,” you say, “I’ll shift my mindset. But HOW?” ⁣

I invited my friend Nick Demos, a Tony Award-winning performer, producer, and director, to tackle this question in today’s episode. Nick helps artists find focus, calm, and clarity. To learn more about his approach, click the link in my bio and tap "Blog/Podcast" to listen.

Sad, but all too true! ⁣ What is your favorite thing to do in your "free time"

“Build it and they will come!” Right? Well, not so much. If you’re thinking that you can simply set up your shop/website and wait for your buyers to arrive, I’m afraid you’re not going to get very far in your art business.⁣
.⁣
The way I see it, there are two things you need to successfully sell your art in today’s environment: an audience (a big one), and a compelling promotion plan to entice people to buy.⁣
.⁣
These are the things that will make or break your art sales, whether you’re selling online, in person, or a combination of both.⁣

You’ll be amazed how much more efficient you can be if you lay out a marketing strategy and then follow it. Rather than flying by the seat of your pants, you’ll know what to do every time you sit down at your desk to work on your marketing.

Hire help for the work that you can’t manage. No business owner can be the creator, the CEO, and the marketing director. Hiring help is the best way to free yourself up to spend more time doing the things that only you can do, which is creating art, engaging with patrons, and creating new business opportunities.

Decide how much time you can realistically spend on marketing. To reign in the amount of marketing time you spend, block off time in your calendar and stick to the plan. That way it won’t take over your life!

Day 47 of #100daysmarketingcreatives - Use Business Cards On Your Stand To Gain Online Traffic ⠀
.⠀
A few years back business cards where expensive and all very similar. They had a name or business name, a logo, a postal address and telephone number. These were all printed on a white background and the reverse side of the card was usually left blank. For the sake of completeness I want to quickly revisit this old style technique just to bring it up to date. ⠀
. ⠀
Use business cards offline at shows to drive customers to your website. Display your website address on your business card and keep it clean and clutter free - use the card to highlight your name, tag line, logo and web address only. Let people find your postal address, email, telephone, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and so on all from your website. This not only keeps the card looking good it gives people another reason to visit your website! ⠀
.⠀
Use one side of the card to print one of your most popular images so that people can recognise your work. Click the link in my bio to read more and find a couple of good business card printers⠀
.⠀
If you have found this free advice useful, please return the favour by following me on Instagram or Facebook liking my posts and mentioning me to your friends! Thanks. ⠀
. ⠀
Do you still use business cards? Are they still effective? What do you put on yours? ⠀

I've been thinking about galleries and if they're here to stay or if they are being shuffled about in the art landscape. *
*
Love @artworkarchive new blog post about a new (ish) kind of venue: the art hotel.
*
*
So lovely to see #toronto @gladstonehotel get a shoutout here too, as I've been aware of the great work they do #supportingartists for years.

My members often ask me questions about legal issues, like how do you copyright your work, and when do you pursue copyright infringement. I decided to bring in an expert on the topic to get some answers. ⁣
.⁣
In this week's podcast, I'm chatting with Gordon Firemark, an attorney who specializes in working with creatives, and we're talking about the most important things that artists need to do from a legal perspective to protect themselves, their work, and their legacy.⁣

Feeling a bit out in the jungle these days. *
*
Too many ideas. Too many directions. Such a messy, wonderful, overwhelming abundance.
*
*
And yet it feels like I cant get a handle on this. It's all coming from unexpected directions. And the directions I have been watching or thinking will be the answer aren't 🤔

Learning. Learning. Learning. ALWAYS.

Social media can be a great accountability tool - read on to see why.

Art and words, together, are a powerful form. *
*
Working today on a project that I conceived of *yikes* almost 5 years ago. And am finally sitting down to putting words together with pieces like this. *
*
Not ready to say too much more about this publicly yet, but am putting this teaser out there as a kind of rope and anchor that I can use to pull myself along, to keep going when things feel tough. *
*
See, now this is out there. You know about it, so now I've got to keep going and show up and do the work I've said I would do. *

Day 29 of #the100dayproject - What To Post About On Instagram ⠀
*⠀
What to post about is probably the second biggest thing people struggle with when they start to post, the first being finding the time but both are easily dealt with by watching others and planning your time well. People often lack confidence to start with. Why will anyone be interested in what they have to say or show but present it well and they will.⠀
*⠀
Avoid the hard sell and too many finished product placements consecutively, mix it up with background on you and your processes, news, milestones, share information your audience might be interested in, use humour. Help your audience get to know you and how you work. Many will want to get to know you before they buy from you, help them to do that. Join a challenge for inspiration.⠀
*⠀
I will cover many of these and other specific things to post in much more detail later in the project. In the meantime click the link in my bio then this image to see strong example posts from my printmaker partner @lucygell where she balances her content to good effect and visit other #100daysmarketingcreatives topics.⠀

Over in my artist account @katiebrennan_ca my art gets reposted by others ALL THE TIME, so I've had to think long and hard about where I come down on this one. And basically, I agree with Gary. *

I then take it one step further and repost that photo to my own feed, thanking the person who posted it 😉

"Katie's strong understanding of how to run and promote a creative business has been invaluable. Her ability to see the whole picture helped me to figure out a long-term gameplan, as well as plot my next steps. She also saw some potential licensing opportunities for my work that I never would have considered on my own. I look forward to having her guidance as a regular part of my practice!"
