1st graders learned that artists create from their imagination and observation. This sweet lil Artist is drawing from observation. I love seeing so much concentration in the art room! #artclass #firstgradeart
I taught my first art classes for the year today! I missed my students over winter break. The theme for this semester: Individual Artistic Style. I want each of them to hone in on their creativity...I have dancers, singers, visual artists...I want them to think deeper about their talents. What are you communicating To whom What are your goals What is your story I want them to use art class as a space to let it all out! Perform! We spoke about safe spaces and they understand our time together is just that. We had a mini talent show and it was nice seeing them take their personal art seriously. They inspire me in so many ways. #springsemester #artclass #supportcreativity #supporttheyouth #artist #artteacher #creativity #safespace #realclouds
It had been a while since I taught a painting class! I gave myself and my students one hour to reinterpret the hues on a color wheel. Such a great way to get to know a new group of students. The first painting is mine, the rest are some samples of their beautiful work.

WIP - I’m teaching an intermediate handbuilding class at @studioamoca , and our first project was to do a series of pieces (in my case, rectangular vessels/vases) and focus on line quality bu adding on a design that are similar to Zentangles. I at first planned on just finishing enough for the students to see the design and then add and subtract creating different levels as the layout flows from one piece to another. But I liked it so much I had to really complete it, not just “demo it.” Really, this is the best part of teaching. We can often get so caught up in our own style or subjects that we don’t really step out of our comfort zone. I would have never played with the red clay and focused so much on different textures if I hadn’t taught a class with the kids where they made the clay and played with it. And I wouldn’t have done something this different (and I think it’s pretty cool) if I hadn’t brought this up as a way to get students practicing line quality.
