Objects of choice and objects inherited – what impressions do they leave on our minds What do we still see in our homes after many years of habitation Do we realize how often we interact with a certain object on a daily, weekly, or a monthly basis
Since we often don’t pay attention to these everyday mundane and repetitive tasks, I wanted to raise my own awareness and be in the present moment. I made an experiment where I counted each time I touched a certain object in a day, such as a light switch, door handle, electric socket, toilet flush handle, cabinet doors, microwave, dog bowl, etc. This repetitive activity of touching the object and then counting each touch resulted in a grid of activity that was classified and recorded.
Using raw clay slabs, I’ve taken impressions of these objects according to how many times per day I interacted with them. Each slab of clay represents 1 day of interacting with that object. The numbers vary greatly and are dependent on the object, ranging from just a couple (dog bowl) to as many as dozens per day (light switch). The resulting Impressions are not replicas of the objects I touch every day. Instead, they are the recordings of my activity, negative reliefs representing memory of touch.

My word-of-the-year is RISE. I will further develop my artistic potential and personal character (courage) while uplifting others, amplifying my voice on that which brings me joy and breaks my heart the most. By doing my small part through art—reflecting, questioning, interpreting—I hope to provoke contemplation and change.
I wish to bring people together and heal the planet by raising awareness of female, post-colonial and environmental issues. There has never been a more important time to celebrate and leverage each other’s differences. Together we are greater; we need each other.
When I choose a word-of-the-year, I‘m often gifted a relevant challenge. In 2018 (after choosing my word VOICE), I literally lost my voice for two weeks. Funny, right! After choosing RISE, I sensed the onset of mild depression and took action to fend it off (45 mins daily exercise, more regular sleep hours, etc.). Unfortunately, upon feeling better my boyfriend and I got food poisoning! Oh, fun. I‘m on the mend and grateful for every day—even in a rough patch. Each time has its gifts; this period has allowed me much-needed quiet, yin time (gloriously negative, dark, feminine). A time of nurturing my spirit and kindling my passions. I am readying; I am ready.
According to Rosalind Picard, MIT, depression is the number one years-lived-with-disability, and is on track to be the number one disease burden in 11 years with more deaths and years-lived-with-disability than cancer, diabetes, war and accidents. By talking we give others permission to talk.
I look forward to seeing where this year will take me! I invite you to ready yourselves and rise with me above personal challenges, politics...whatever is in your way so we can focus on what counts most—and get some good shit done in 2019!

“Later, the palm trees that surrounded the peaceful night-time home are lit like match sticks while tanks, belonging to the United Nation’s “peacekeeping” force, MINUSTAH, roll by accompanied by the words “Brought to you kindly by the world.”
Through this series of stories, Jolivert draws on personal experience and observation to critically engage systems of power and disenfranchisement that transcend national boundaries. The resonances produced through the collection—through the repetition of ideas and symbols—make it clear that there are no easy answers. Her approach, however, is hopeful. Jolivert takes up the elements of everyday life in order to question that life and ultimately make it better.” Winter Schneider (2015)

“Jolivert takes us from Port-au-Prince to New York City and over the oceans that separate them. We see the bodies of “boat people”- inky black against the waves - as they struggle to stay afloat. In the background is a sinking boat, and we see Lasirèn again, seemingly also drowning. Commercial airplanes fly above them, unconcerned.” .
