Part of the explanation was provided by Plank’s equation: the observation of few different wavelengths in the line spectrum meant that only few energies were possible, the energy levels of an atom had to be quantized and only states that had certain values of energy were allowed. In 1913 Bohr proposed a theoretical model for the hydrogen atom that can explain its emission spectrum starting from an assumption (BIG ASSUMPTION!): the electron moves around the nucleus in circular ORBITS that can have only certain allowed radii. The series of lines in the emission spectrum of hydrogen (and other atoms) are given by the electronic transitions from higher energy orbits to the second (or in general lower) orbits. This electronic transition (which can be visualised as a jump) releases multiple photons at different wavelengths thatour eyes can convert into different colours.

Today this effect is largely used for examples in lamps that have different colourssuch as hydrogen lamps are red, helium lamps are yellow, mercury lamps are blue. Isn’t it super fascinating?

Lawrencium is the last of the actinides, and the last of the f-block elements in this series! Soon we will return to the main block of the periodic table and I’ll finally get to talk about some non-metals! Thank you for bearing with all these radioactive heavy metals.

Element 103 was discovered in 1965 by Georgy Flerov and his colleagues in Russia as well as their usual rivals, the Ghiorso group at Berkeley University. IUPAC deemed the Russians’ work more worthy of the honour when the Berkeley lab’s work was a different isotope of lawrencium.

The rare radioactive metal is named after Ernest O. Lawrence who invented the cyclotron particle accelerator – the piece of instrumentation used to discover most of these elements.

It is essentially a big ring of magnets that gradually speeds up sub-atomic particles in a circle until they have sufficient energy to smash into each other at high speed to form new atoms and new elements.

I visited the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland in 2015 when I lived in Basel. Have you ever visited a particle accelerator?
