After an initial reaction of extreme excitement (“It’s BLUE!!” 💙😱), followed by a fair bit of head scratching, I believe that this is likely a well decayed Lactarius deliciosus. However, I must admit, I’ve never seen one stain so vividly and completely before - especially with almost royal blue tones! Typically, this species begins as a solidly orange mushroom that begins to stain green with age. There have been a great abundance of them in our forests of late, and I have seen them in various stages of orange and orange/green coloration - but none like this. Had it been in better condition, I would have tried to confirm the latex colour, which would have been helpful in verifying the ID. But since I couldn’t do that, I took a few photos and will hope that a little discussion can confirm or deny my suspicions... so please do weigh in if you can! 😊🍄🙏 #mushroomsociety #vancouverisland #nature_brilliance
It was around 6:00 when I left the lake (At 5:59 I saw a bear); 6:20 when I detoured here. Sunset was at 6:32 and I had a 2.5hour descent. I was all up in my head because I was chasing time and light. But nothing in these precious 20 minutes would I ever forget or regret because even though it was getting dark, I was hungry, I was tired, anxious, wanted to get back asap... I was alone, and this... this was it.
I felt so honored to be invited to a potlatch, which is a traditional gathering in a big house of the First Nations of the BC coast. The potlatch was banned in Canada between 1885 and 1951 and the Kwakwaka’wakw people fought for decades for the return of their sacred regalia that had ended up in museum and private collections around the world. At this potlatch in Alert Bay in 2017, @PaulNicklen and I were told, 'with ceremony comes respect,' and that the two are intertwined. For thousands of years, Indigenous people all over the world have safeguarded traditional knowledge and the natural systems of the earth. The @NiaTero Foundation is working with Indigenous peoples and local communities to ensure they can successfully defend and govern their territories, manage and protect their natural resources, and pursue their livelihoods. I think the work they're doing is incredible. Go to the link in my bio to visit their website, and follow them on Instagram @Niatero to keep up with their inspiring work! #WeAreIndigenous #tradition #Indigenous
