A letter to my doula on #worlddoulaweek
From one doula to another, thank you. 🙌🏽Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.🙌🏽 Because you showed up for me when I was pregnant and the transformation was intense.
Because you midwifed me when I didn’t have a midwife who I really connected with, or who really knew me and understood me.
Because you asked me the questions that scratched beneath the surface. The river beneath the river.
Because you knew how to help me uncover what was really motivating me when I was worried and stressed.
Because you respected my choices and held the space for me to find my own answers.
Because you drove for 3.5 hours to come to me in labour with no questions asked.
Because you stayed with me for the long hours that passed. Always reassuring me. Nurturing me. Protecting me when I felt unsafe. Gently guiding me back to myself.

Because you held me close and supported me, even more so as my birth unfolded so differently to how I had hoped.
Because you cared for my whole family including my little blind dog at home.
Because you came to visit me so early the next day after my birth and tended to my babe with such admiration and gentleness when I could barely move.
Because you mothered me, so I could learn to mother my babe.
I will always be so grateful. @thecircleofbirth

Can we talk about how magical it is to have LIGHT on the drive home at the end of the day??
☀️
Today’s work was a beautiful mix of painting rainbows with children, leading mindfulness meditation, talking about postpartum depression, healing trauma, and assigning the L Word on Netflix as therapy homework. 🌈
This queer art therapy doula is so grateful for the opportunity to bring light into the dark and invite new opportunities for play and self compassion.
❤️
What is bringing you joy today!? Tell me all about it 👇🏼

{ INTERNAL DIALOGUE }⠀
•⠀
What are you telling yourself every day? What messages are you sending your brain?⠀
•⠀
Are you trying to conceive, but telling yourself everyday, “if my body wasn’t broken, I’d be pregnant by now..”? Try sending love down to your womb and let her know she’s safe to have and hold a baby.⠀
•⠀
Are you huffing and puffing each time your period comes around? Try sending gratitude to your body for working like it’s expected and keeping you strong and healthy.⠀
•⠀
Do you look in the mirror in the morning and fill pull your energy from words like “disgusting,” “fat,” and “broken”? Try recognizing the hard work your body has put in and that you are able to change the direction your body goes starting now.⠀
•⠀
If you’ve already convinced your brain that you can’t conceive, your period is a nuisance, and your body is disgusting.... why would your body ever change for you?⠀
•⠀
Stop beating yourself up with your words.⠀
•⠀
Try these instead:⠀
✨ I AM BEAUTIFUL⠀
⠀
✨ I AM STRONG AND ABLE⠀
⠀
✨ I AM BIGGER THAN THIS⠀
⠀
✨ I AM ONLY ON CONTROL OF ME⠀
⠀
✨ I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR FEELINGS⠀
⠀
✨ MY BODY IS A PRIZED POSSESSION ONLY TO BE SHARED WITH THOSE WHO RECOGNIZE ITS MAGIC⠀
⠀
✨ I AM LOVED AND SUPPORTED⠀
•⠀
I already feel lighter! 😘 what’s your favorite mantra? I’m sharing mine in the comments! ⠀

my doula + mama heart can’t handle how perfect this is — hey now, hey now, this is what dreams are made of ✨ #Repost @hilaryduff ・・・
I’ve been wondering for a long time if I would ever share this video as it is extremely personal.... it was so absolutely lovely and rewarding(and shocking) that after giving birth to my baby girl we hugged ...for the first time, In my mind I like to believe that she was saying good job mom. Go team go. We did it. Together. Matt provided such a safe calm strength, my mommy and sissy were there to cheer me on, and of course my birth angels to make sure all was well and big brother (downstairs deep in legos). I cannot believe this day was only 5 months ago!! It seems like B has been here with us all along. The time is already going so fast..she tried avocado yesterday! Anyway... feeling blessed for this full hectic life and all the people in it. Happy 5 months Banks (oh and thanks for quitting colic) that was a doozy ( @rebeccacoursey_photosandfilm )

This is also what empowered birth looks like!
We support ALL birth - EVEN scheduled cesarean birth. Making informed decisions with non-judgmental support, education and compassion from your team is empowered birth at its finest!

Sometimes our support looks very different then you'd expect.
Sometimes our support falls heavier on the prenatal education and empowerment side and less on the physical labour support side. Sometimes it means your doula joins you pre-surgery and gives you a foot rub and loses terribly at a game of cribbage.

This weekend we led a group of both seasoned 🦋 and blossoming 🐛 San Francisco birth professionals across the threshold into Birthing from Within. These women inspired us, and touched our hearts. 💕 We watched them transform before our eyes, tapping into deep self-compassion, and taking on the big work of self-discovery. 🏞️ Each Crossing the Threshold is different - shaped by the people who attend, their stories, and their dreams. This weekend was about learning, and unlearning. Shedding what no longer served them, 🥀 and uncovering greater truths. 🏵️ These folks are well on their way to changing birth in our culture, and guiding parents through birth as a heroic journey. 🌀

✨ B I R T H S T O R Y ✨
(Part one)
From the beginning, I knew I was going to have a cesarean. Call it intuition, or call it forboding, I choose to believe it was the first option. Could it have been fear? Maybe. Did I doubt my ability to deliver? Absolutely. I will never know if it is because of my decisions (choosing an OB/GYN because of his finesse in surgery, not joining any birthing classes, blindly trusting the system, being afraid, etc) or if it was because I had a lack of a natural birthing support system, virtually no friends who had been pregnant, and a belief I wasn't strong enough. Along with all of this I was diagnosed with Syncope at 5 months pregnant. A disorder with unknown origins and a terrifying way of causing me to faint at any second with no warning and no triggers. I passed out while driving, and wrecked my vehicle at 6mo pregnant. No more driving for me after that. My labor started early - August 21st at 36 weeks. Heavy contractions around 5 minutes apart nearly every day. So I began nesting and trying to remain positive. After a month with no change and countless hospital visits I begged my Dr to just schedule my csection. He grudgingly obliged and set the date on my EDD September 27th. 3 days before, my insurance denied the procedure causing me to spiral in depression and anxiety. We went in for another checkup on the 27th to see if anything had changed. Nothing. On our way home from the doctor, we were rear ended making my contractions sky rocket. I was admitted and labored with no change throughout that day without my husband Charlie as he took the brunt of the wreck and needed to get x-rays and CT scans. I decided to ask them to give me something to slow my contractions so Charlie could be there with me. They gave me a muscle relaxer and I fell asleep, waking the next morning with no contractions at all. Defeated again, we returned home to try to kick start labor and to try to rest. Charlie was in incredible pain. In looking for the silver lining I think it was good I didn't go back into heavy labor yet because he was able to rest and recover in time for Tripp's arrival. (To be continued)

A Doula’s primary purpose is to be a consistent support to you and your family as you journey through pregnancy and birth and transition into parenthood. Doulas provide emotional, physical and educational support to you and your family. This may come in the form of prenatal support, support during your labour & delivery or care during those first several weeks after baby is born. But what does it look like? .
.
.
But sometimes a Doula looks a little different in each circumstance. Sometimes in the moment a birth partner acts like a Doula, or a mother or family member attending the birth steps in to help along the way. Sometimes a Doula means knowing when to step back and provide gentle guidance to those in the birth space on how they can be of better support to the birthing mama. This mama had an incredible support team. Her husband never left her side, encouraging her every step of the way and when he needed a rest her mother stepped in. From one generation to another, encouraging her daughter, “I birthed you the same way and you will birth your baby girl too. You are so strong. She’s almost here.” .
.
.

When I think of a Doula I think of a mama; gentle, loving and nurturing, encouraging, supportive and protective. Doulas provide support but also provide so much more. We provide reassurance, we protect and keep your birth space, we provide care from the depths of our hearts because we want nothing more than for your birth to be the best birth experience it possibly can be. And lastly, we never leave you. We are there for the long haul no matter what the circumstance. We support you.

This quote is a fave amongst many doulas...a celebration of the many ways doulas can positively impact a birth - body/mind/soul/spirit.

From a beautiful weekend of connection. The labyrinth of birth symbolizes a mother’s emotional and physical passage to her baby. As long as she follows her path of intuition, she will always find the way. Birth is a miraculous journey. #birthingfromwithin

We love our Doulas!

Do you know how a Doul can support you and your partner through your birth and parenting journey?

Having hands on support from a trained birth professional has been proven to reduce:

Stress and anxiety
Length of labour
Risk of interventions during birth
Cesarean birth and so much more.

A doula can be your coach, your advocate, your teacher and your friend.

Some sobering statistics –
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) Australia’s Mothers and Babies report 2016 (the most recent report) states the following:

78% of mothers who gave birth in 2016 had pain relief. That’s almost 4 out of 5 women!
55% of women chose nitrous oxide (gas and air);
36% of women chose regional analgesic (epidurals)
17% of women chose systemic opioids (morphine/pethidine)
63% of women who opt for an epidural (who don’t birth via c-section) end up having instrumental vaginal deliveries (use of forceps, vacuum etc.) The scary thing is, that when you choose to have an epidural you increase your chance of having other medical and instrumental interventions by well over 50%. So, you’re up to the heroic path of experiencing your birth in all its intensity and reality?

To give yourself the best chance of coping with the intensity and pains of birth, saying no to any type of induction is top priority (unless truly medically indicated – hint: usually it’s not ever really medically indicated). The AIMS booklet by Sara Wickham has some great guidance regarding induction. Also, get clued up on the hormones of birth with Dr Sarah Buckley’s resources.

When birthing people have the freedom to follow their instincts, they well supported and are educated on the birth process, they will naturally find their own unique behaviours or things that enable them to cope with the intensity of birth. It might be intensely following their own breathing – breath awareness (we practise this in my prenatal yoga classes, as well as other supportive breathing practices), they find postures that are comfortable and support the pelvis to open and maximise gravity, they may do something very specific – count, or repeat something either outloud or in their head, they may visualise something, or move in a certain way, make loud sounds, even swear (swearing is scientifically proven to reduce your perception of pain!). Then there’s a multitude of “tools” you can have at hand – birth partners who can provide acupressure, massage, hip squeezes, and heat packs, or ice. (Cont in comments)

It's World Doula Week! Tell a friend about your doula and how they improved your birth experience!

Kayla's Story:

The doula who supported us through the birth of our daughter was hired while I was in labour (yup - talk about last minute!). I had an incredible doula support me prenatally and postpartum, but I went into labour much sooner than expected and she was out of town when labour was suddenly upon me. So I needed to find someone for birth support - and quickly!
I remember the moment she walked through my front door. I recall exactly how I felt and how relieved I was to feel her hands squeezing my hips.
After my daughter was finally in my arms I recall saying "Oh shoot! I owe you some money hey? Please let me know what your fee is and I'll send it right away." She could have told us her fee was $5000 and we would have paid it with no hesitations. The support, compassion, comfort, and empowerment this woman helped me discover was worth every penny. An empowered birth was a priority for us. And we made it happen (she didn't charge $5000 by the way). #transitiondoulas #yegdoula #birthingfromwithin #birthwarrior #postpartum #parenting #wortheverypenny

I’m still processing this really profound experience from yesterday. Koyuki Smith, @birthingfromwithinnewyork superstar, gave @bradleybates and I a private session. BFW is a deep way of approaching and looking at the birth experience, and Koyuki is a master at making this work really accessible. After going through the exercises - including the labyrinth pictured here - I have a way greater sense of comfort and ease surrounding birth. @birthingfromwithinnewyork, we really cannot thank you enough. This will stay with me for a long, long time. 💗

The final session of the weekend, the day I devote to “what happens next?!” The day we learn about cesarean birth, breastfeeding, your postpartum body, your newborn and how to navigate the early days together. I don’t take this work lightly, and hopefully I never will. The families that fill these classes are trusting me with a huge part of their journey, the day I take that lightly is the day to stop. But for now I will keep loving it, this work is such a gift 🎁

Every night at dinner we share our highlights of the day. Today my highlight was witnessing the subtle connections between couples in my prenatal class. The unspoken language of touch. This may be part of what makes being a birth worker so amazing, to be a witness of the incredible unspoken connection between a couple as they welcome a new life, one that they have created together, into this world.

As Spring brings beautiful bluebonnets and sunny skies, it also brings an abundance of Live Oak pollen for San Antonio residents. I asked local experts @functionalmidwiferytx @empoweredchiromassage and @lotusrehab about how pregnant and nursing folks can safely treat seasonal allergies. They weighed in on prevention, symptom treatment, and managing side effects. Link in bio!

At @birtharlington we are passionate about providing resources for our clients to educate themselves on all of the aspects of pregnancy, birth, postpartum and newborn care! One of the ways we do that is through our lending library! 🤰🏻working on some handouts for my class 🤰🏻
EARLY LABOR: •this stage of labor is the longest of all the stages •early labor is defined as the onset of regular contractions to 6cm dilated •your cervix is thinning, softening, and opening in order for baby to enter into the pelvis •early labor can last for days or hours; typically, first time moms can expect a long early labor 🤯 *que comfort measures!*
•labor is different for all moms! you may have all of these signs or only a few
•talk to your care provider and doula about when you should head to the hospital! most hospitals won’t admit patients until they’re in active labor (6cm and on) ⚡️

Reading the book #birthingfromwithin of @PamEngland during my pregnancy was my saviour, cause it helped me to dive into my creativity and to dare new types of creations.
.
Few weeks before giving birth to our little son Iasonas Simon - with his soon to be father - @vlad_low_flow we made my belly cast.
.
I painted it when Iasonas was around 5 months, inspired after a quite vivid dream I had. I then donated my belly cast to #riverdalemidwives, as a gesture of deep appreciation for their presence and guidance during my birth story. .
.
The Birth Stories Art Book "Birth As You Please" that I am creating, it actually started long time ago. I planted its seed when I got pregnant and now I see it is flowering with your support!
Thank you!
Crowdfunding Indiegogo Dates: 2nd of April to 10th of May

Parenting is a constant push and pull between what my kids want and what I want. (Also throw in the mix what my marriage, home, and career want.) It's pouring paint 🎨 when I have to catch a flight ✈️ in a few hours and haven't packed yet. It's checking out for a little bit while my kids eat a snack. 🍿 It's pushing things back and back and back in my calendar 📅 when my kids need a lot from me. It's sitting my little one down in front of the TV 📺 while I hop on a conference call. ☎️ I think balance in parenting is a myth...something you can spend your kids' whole childhood striving for and still feel like you fall short. But push and pull...this is something I can manage. Sometimes it's your turn, and sometimes it's my turn. No, we don't always get what we want, but my hope is that by setting boundaries and also being flexible, we can all get what we need. 🌱❤️🍃 #birthingfromwithin #bfwsa #pushandpull #goodenoughmom #goodenoughparenting #sanantoniomoms #personalgrowth

Today is the first day of World Doula Week🌍 & I want to acknowledge and honor every DOPE DOULA who’s out there working their damn asses off as agents of change in our maternal healthcare system worldwide.
:
I have a daily reminder on my phone that says “there’s enough for everyone” that buzzes everyday at 7am.
It’s easy to get catty and competitive in client to client based work.
Especially when you’re just starting out and are SO thirsty for every hire/client to make ends meat and to prove you’re making the right choice in pursuing this work.
:
The more births I’ve attended and the longer I’ve been in the birth world I know at my core there’s space for everyone who wants to be a doula.
(I believe around only 9% of families hire doulas!!)
This path sure ain’t easy but you can make this work what you want it to be and I know that the world deserves and NEEDS more doulas.
:
👉🏾We need emotional intelligence.
👉🏽We need advocates.
👉🏼We need each other.
Thank you to my teachers( @chamawoydak ; @luminouspostpartum ) thank you to my colleagues at @homegrown_babies , and thank you to every doula within this tight knit community and beyond.
THERE’S ENOUGH FOR EVERYONE.

. I’m one step closer to my @doulatrainingsint Certification, and rooting deeper into my intention to support birth parents and families with high risk pregnancies, multiples, and planned caesarean births. With the help of a doula, I was given so many tools to truly empower myself to birth in this moment, and to have the sacred birth I always wanted 🖤 can not wait to offer up the same support to others. Grateful to walk this path and REALLY excited to dive deeper!

Today we celebrate the beauty of our differences and the power of the #luckyfew ... its #worlddownsyndromeday and March 21was selected as a symbolic date of Trisomy 21 (the extra chromosome 21st chromosome)
✨
On this day, people with Down syndrome and those who love them and work with them throughout the world organize and participate in activities and events to raise public awareness and create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down syndrome.
❤️
This sweet little nugget is Aria and her family raises awareness about down syndrome over at @upsidesofdowns ... there are so many folks out there spreading love and positivity and promoting acceptance and celebration of all babies and bodies!

💃🏽☀️🌱
Spring air is putting a new bounce in my step! Do you feel it??
🌕
It could also be the Super Moon paired with the Spring Equinox that’s got us feeling all sorts of ready.
❤️
Now is the time to set some intentions and invite in new beginnings. If there’s something you really DESIRE, say it loud and declare it so. Plant those seeds and watch them grow with each new day that passes.

Did you ever stop to think about how Pregnant people are portals from one world to the next?
If you think about it that way, it makes perfect sense that we gift babies with the term “earth side” after they are born.
Wombxn go deep when they birth their babies. So many chemical, emotional and spiritual changes are happening in our bodies before and during as well as after we give birth.
For example, did you know that a Womban in Labour must pass through different levels of brain wave activity in order to do this sacred work?
Most people spend their time in Beta wave activity, this means they are alert and awake. This would look like early Labour. It is exciting and you are still able to do all the things.
Next you have Alpha, followed by Theta. In Alpha you may be distracted, able to answer questions but moving into “Labour-land”. In Theta is where the magic happens. This is the hard, active Labour, where your brain requires you to go into the depths of yourself so that you may bring forth this new little soul. This is the meditative state.
The interesting part about this “state” is that the more we interrupt the wombxn doing this very important work, the more we pull her out of Theta state, and into Alpha or even Beta, which interrupts the process.
This is why having birth support is SO important. Having someone to hold space for you, so that you are free to do the work you need to do, can make all the difference in your birth. When we support this sacred work, we lift up the wombxn of this world and say, YOU are important, YOU are worthy, YOUR voice matters. .
.
.
How do you show support?

When the women I support venture deep into labor, I go with them.

My inner knowing becomes attuned to their thought pattern. I sense their doubts, fears and misgivings about their capabilities. I can tell when old patterns of self criticism and hatred begin to reappear, telling them they can't possibly do what is being asked of them.

But I know those sentiments are wrong. And so I come close to the faces of these beautiful, laboring mothers so they can look into my eyes, and I have them repeat after me

I love my body.

I love my baby.

I trust my baby.

I am a good mother.

I am strong.

I am open.

I am ready.

I love my body.

I love my body.

I love my body.

Negative self talk, especially toward our sacred bodies, can be our worst enemy in labor. Our conscious ego doesn't realize that our old selves must die, or that our bodies must experience the sensations of opening and releasing in order to bring our babies forth from our wombs into our arms, thus facilitating our rebirth as a mother.

The resistance that begs for relief is something that must be broken through. We must turn our resistance into resilience by allowing our minds to trust the unconscious part of ourselves, and allowing our bodies to be uncomfortable and willfully feel the physical and existential physical pains of birth, death and rebirth all at once.

Why?
