OXALIC ACID TREATMENT
Used to remove rust and bring back the original paint. Oxalic acid is suitable for cleaning of objects with paint under the surface layer of rust.
You will need:
- a container
- oxalic acid
- sodium bicarbonate
- brush with soft bristles
⚠️To protect herself:
- safety goggles - mask
- latex gloves
How to proceed:
For an optimal result, leave the piece in a container with only water for 2/3 days to soften the rust and sometimes cleaning with brush. After this process let the piece dry. USE PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT. Prepare the solution with this ratio, a spoon of oxalic acid for a liter of warm water and mix with stick. Now immerse the piece (one at a time).
Leave the relic in the solution and every half hour/ one hour check it out and clean it with brush (with soft bristles); warning don't rub hard in this moment the paint is so weak. If you are satisfied with the result, remove the piece and rinse with running water; otherwise repeat the process for a maximum of five times. When the water turns green remove the piece, now leaving the piece immersed is dangerous, because the action of the acid is exhausted and the acid would form an orange patina hard to remove. Now prepare a solution with a spoon of sodium bicarbonate for a liter of water and immerse the piece into it for 15 minutes. Clean the piece with running water. Let the piece dry and the process is over. When the piece is completely dry prevent rust with anti-rust oil or transparent paint.
The photos show the process applied to an M33 Italian helmet.
