Alison Saar’s work Caché captures the complexity and nuance of hair for womxn of African descent. The figure is shown directly on the ground which reflects Saar’s desire to show the figure in a position of vulnerability. The exposed female form is juxtaposed with the weight of hair, which is tightly wound in a black ball. Alison Saar visited the Hood Museum of Art in March to speak about her life in work as part of a Spring Symposium hosted by the museum. Saar met directly with Dartmouth Students to share her own journey to #blackartherstory.

Sylvia D. Hamilton’s Here We Are Here inspired the title of the exhibition. In her piece, she reflects on the history of trade and slavery at the root of the Canadian colonial nation, and unveils the material and ideological traces of anti-Black racism in Canada. This piece is a combination of sound, images, and objects that explore the interlaced themes of history, both personal and collective, and memory in the lives, connections, and experiences of African Canadians across time and space.

See it as part of the exhibition Here We Are Here: Black Canadian Contemporary Art, on view now at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia until October 27.

‘KISS MY GENDERS” exhibition, celebrating international artists who explore gender identity, is currently showing at @hayward.gallery until the 8th September!
•
Here is the work by the South African artist Zanele Muholi (@muholizanele ) 🖤, « Phila I, Parktown » (2016)
•
About the artist, by the curator:
« In their ongoing series of self-portraits ´ 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘯𝘺𝘢𝘮𝘢 𝘕𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘺𝘢𝘮𝘢: 𝘏𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘓𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴’, Zanele Muholi uses everyday domestic materials to craft elaborate costumes or backdrops that hold deep psychological or political significance. For each image in this series, Muholi has deliberately altered the contrast in order to enhance the dark tones. Speaking of this series, Muholi states: ‘I’m reclaiming my blackness, which I feel is continuously performed by the privileged other’.

#Highergoals combines aesthetic and social concerns; the bottle cap patterns draw on both African and Islamic design, Florentine mosaics, and hanging ivy. Even #davidhammons working method (time consuming hard-work instead of modern fabrication techniques) is based on a tribal African notion of time instead of contemporary ‘fast time’ Mr. Hammons says.

We celebrating #selfcaresunday by sharing what we love most, Black Avantgarde. #wemakeculture #beunruly 🧡💚 WHATIFTHEWORLD is pleased to present e wá wo mi (*come look at me) – a new photographic series by Nigerian artist Lakin Ogunbanwo. Central to Ogunbanwo’s latest exploration, is the culture surrounding Nigerian brides and marriage ceremonies. He uses veiled portraiture to document the complexity of his culture, and counteract the West’s monolithic narratives of Africa and women.
Ogunbanwo’s interest in expanding the contemporary African visual archive began in 2012 with his acclaimed ongoing project, ‘Are We Good Enough’. In this series, he documents hats worn as cultural signifiers by various ethnic groups in Nigeria. In e wá wo mi Ogunbanwo furthers this investigation by representing the traditional ceremonial wear of the Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa-Fulani tribes, amongst others. Rather than objectively archive these as past-traditions, however, he mimics the pageantry of weddings in present Nigeria. He creates elaborate sets of draped fabric as a backdrop for these brides to perform.
The performances these brides carry out are ones of love, familial and cultural pride, feminine strength, and a heterogenous African identity, but they are also the burdens of being wives, mothers and daughters-in-law. The expectation of femininity, and the role of women, are canonised on the wedding day. “From how she dresses, to how she carries herself, to what she is told. She will be fertile, she should be submissive and supportive: These are the things she hears on that day.” Ogunbanwo reflects, “I’ve found weddings to be very performative, and most of the performance generally rests on the bride.” On this day, the bride is admired and observed for her proximity to a constructed womanhood: she is feminine, demure, grateful, emotional, and graceful. Ogunbanwo comments on this by obfuscating the individuality of these women, masking their faces with veils— a style signature to his photography.

CAN ART AMEND HISTORY ?

1. Louise de Kéroualle, Duchess of Portsmouth • Pierre Mignard • 1682 (National Portrait Gallery, London) || via @nationalportraitgallery: « Louise de Kéroualle came first to England from France in 1670 as a maid of honour to Charles II's sister, the Duchess of Orleans. She returned to become the king's mistress in 1671, with the encouragement of the French government, who hoped she would be a diplomatic asset. Created Duchess in 1673, she bore Charles one son, Charles, Duke of Richmond (1672 -1723), and exercised some influence at court. The enslaved African child's identity is unknown and she is included only to confirm the status of her owner. She is shown presenting precious coral, pearls and shell to the duchess to emphasise her wealth and position. The child's dark skin also emphasises the whiteness of the duchess's complexion. »

This is the last week to see @profabladeglover latest exhibition in london at the @octobergallery : Wogbe Jeke - We Have Come à Long Way.
A medley of colours deftly applied onto the canva with a technique the artist is renowned for, impasto, reveals from afar recurring market scenes, forests and portraiture.
On close inspection it’s nothing short of a dazzling series of experimentation with colours and paint, bordering on abstraction. .

I saw @simoneyvetteleigh’s ‘Loophole of Retreat’ this weekend, just as I was finishing Ted Chiang’s story ‘The Truth of Fact, the Truth of Feeling’ which talks quite a bit about feedback loops, and a month after seeing ‘A Strange Loop,’ a show that still hasn’t left me, and it sort of makes sense that loops are part of the cultural output of 2019

It was finished. It was framed, but I wasn’t satisfied. So I pulled it apart to re-work it.
I’ve been thinking a lot about longevity. About art history and the excavation of historical data.
The inserted photo is of a great aunt. It is a 1920 passport picture. Taken before Jamaica’s independence - under the Colonial Secretariat. I believe it is the oldest picture of a relative we have. I am now satisfied that I have embedded a valuable layer of personal history.
*
On the left side I placed my ticket that I received to enter Goree Island, Senegal - to experience “The Door of No Return.” I have saved it for 22years. It was important to me. Besides the memory of the trip itself, that piece of paper is and has been important to me. Embedded here next to this photo, this evidence of a travel document - evidence of someone traveling freely of their own accord is a good juxtaposition. The lady at the center, faces another portal - one that leads into the future - she will step forward into a future her ancestors could never imagine. Or perhaps one of them saw it and persevered......... *
