Wild Week, Day 2, Meal 3. Well, the power is out, which is really putting me in my place. Here I've been demonstrating getting your nutrients from only wild foods for the past couple days in an attempt to get in touch with the ancient way of doing things and then boom, the power goes out for going on 12 hours now, reminding me that I'm still surrounded by a wealth of modern conveniences, and that even candles are a blessing. 🙂
But there went the plans I had for dinner... I was thinking about a venison stew or maybe a Braised cottontail rabbit with Lambsquarter greens, but now I'm just trying to keep all the food I've saved up for this week from spoiling. Luckily it's cold enough outside that I've just moved it all out there and covered it up. I'm hoping no varmints get into it, but I guess I have to take that risk.
In the mean time, I know it's not a great picture, but here's dinner: Saskatoon fruit leather (like homemade fruit roll ups) and black walnuts. I didn't want to break into the walnuts for dinner because I only have one bag to last me 7 breakfasts. 😮 But after watching the whole family eat hamburgers and mac n cheese at one of the only restaurants around we could find with power, I'm just so damn hungry I can't help it. I also had about half a cup of Bluegill and violet soup leftover from lunch, so that helps.
I'm actually quite grateful for this challenge. This is what our ancestors and many people still today have to deal with, food insecurity. Even when we're lucky enough to have enough food, there are a number of disasters just lurking around the corner that could take it all away... Drouts, pests, raiding tribes, colonists, crop failures, health department inspectors, power outages, you name it. There's always something that could go wrong and we need to be prepared. I've learned my lesson.
