End grain sealing is always a challenge here in NOLA. While it apparently looks good when wood is in close contact with wet or wetable surfaces. Currently available wood is not as decay resistant as old growth material.
It is a big part of our practice to make sure end grain does not soak up wood.
Enter my share tree test method, green dye in artisanal water on a magic eraser.
The wood is basic pine left over from other jobs.
Recently I had used so@e of Smith’s two part epoxy sealer to seal the bottom of a door that had previously been neglected for several years and showed serious decay.
Check out the casual results. I did trim 1/4” off the end to see how the color showed in the end grain. While there seem to be a couple of good choices I suggest you pick one that works best for you. #abatronwoodrestore #smith’sepoxy sealer #minwax #Bondo #oilprimer
