Mount Kenya, a magnificent expanse of striking, rocky peaks and unique, verdant foliage. Dusted with snow, but situated less than 20 KM south of the equator, this landscape often took my breath away. Exploring this mountain range was so special, as African alpine landscapes are experiencing some of the fastest climate change related transformations on the planet. Glaciers on Mt. Kenya have all but disappeared over the last 30 years, and the communities in the area’s foothills who rely on them for water have been forced to keep pushing inward toward the mountains, clearing trees and further altering the landscape in their plight.
Mt. Kenya serves as just one example of a region with a specific set of ecological dynamics that are edging on total collapse because of climate change. Seeing this firsthand was striking, and further compelled me to keep sharing the phenomena I witness around the world resulting from the massive environmental shifts our world is seeing today. After attending the @globalclimatestrike today in DC, these issues weigh heavily on my mind as I gear up for an impactful project in the Amazon Rainforest, the seat of another major environmental crisis.
Through the narrow beam of a headlamp rock becomes foreign. Shadows elongate and shrink with the slightest movement, making crimps look like jugs and jugs like crimps. Move too close to the wall and you may find your headlamp pressed against rock, your view stifled. Such challenges make moderate routes far more interesting and enjoyable, at least to me.
After cruising an unidentified route Liv clips the chains in Bear Canyon, east of Bozeman last night.

Here’s to taking the scenic way in life! A climbing goal of ours since the beginning, me and the homie @jasondanoff took a ride on Sedona’s Scenic Cruise. An unforgettable day of incredible climbing and even better views! Cheers 🍻

You tie in to the "sharp end", squeeze your feet into your climbing shoes, do your final safety checks with your belayer, dip your hands into your chalk bag as you take a final look at the route from the safety and stability of terra firma, and then with a call of "climbing!" you pull on. As your feet first leave the ground your mind goes quiet. There's no room for doubt, no time for second guessing. It's time to focus, it's just you and the rock. Your mind is sharp, you plan your moves: easy moves to get my left hand on this slopey ledge, right hand up to that sidepull there, then I can move my right foot high to that little edge, left foot smears on almost nothing... But if I stand up on this right foot and can't find anything for my left hand I'm fucked... It's ok, that looks like a good hold up there, just go for it... Dammit, it's not a good hold!... What do I do Is there a better hold Nnnnope, back to that shitty one. Where do I put my feet Oh shit I'm getting pumped, my hand might slip any moment. Keep breathing! I need to move but can I trust my grip on this hold Well it's that or fall... Ok, falling from here looks safe enough so... just go for it! Slap the right hand out to that blind crack, fingers wrap around the edge and boom, it's a jug! Get your feet set, find a good balance, make the next clip. You're 'safe' for now. Take a second to relax, shake out, and breathe deeply before you do it again all the way to the top!
Climbing makes me smile.
Climbing makes me sweat.
Climbing makes me scared.
Climbing makes me swear.
Climbing makes me solve problems.
Climbing makes me serene.
Climbing makes me stronger than I've ever been.
