Ohhhh Monday, the week day equivalent to watching paint dry... we meet again. I’m never ready for the weekend to be over. I hope everyone has a wonderful day today though
Coastal lanterns. You've seen them flanking the front doors of many a New England coastal cottage, illuminating patios and decks and gracing the interiors of many an exceptional coastal home. Charming, authentic, hand-made by skilled craftsman with the same traditional methods honed by years of experience.
KITCHEN PENDANTS || As homeowners we run into projects that can be overwhelming. Lighting is one of those projects that can be a little tricky 💡 Having a professional guide you through the placement and selection process means we will create the best plan for your home and optimising it’s functionality 💡
Today, I will walk you through one of those little components that make a huge difference; installing kitchen pendant lights.
Here are our best tips for hanging pendant lights over your Kitchen Island Bench:
💡the space between the pendants should be larger than the diameter of the pendants (but not too far otherwise the relationship between them is lost)
💡 aim for a height above benchtop of 750 - 850mm, this means you can still see the faces of people sitting at the breakfast bar side of the Island Bench but still have the benefits of task lighting from the pendants
💡 how many pendants do you hang above the Island Bench is the tough question... I love the rule of three, odd numbers always look better to me. But this will be dependant on the length of the benchtop and the diameter of your pendant.
Start your plan for your new home early, even before your slab is poured! This means you can plan your layouts and ensure all possibilities can be achieved... lighting is one of the most important components of a new home and in some cases it’s very hard to change later! 💡

These delightfully authentic cottage designs combined with the Victorian scrollwork often end up close to the home, on the sunporch or on the deck that overlooks your ocean view...perhaps down in the yard close to the water's edge.
I am perpetually changing decorative areas around our house and after I scored some great finds at @homegoods yesterday, I added two pieces to this cabinet— the Lindroth vase dupe that I found for $11 (!!) and the large ginger jar. I moved the other ginger jar and candlesticks to different spots in the house. I just love treasure hunting! And that little angel girl with her blankies 👼🏼💕 #treasurehunting #homegoodsfinds #homegoodshappy #gingerjars
When you’re sitting inside a coffee shop in the city on a lazy Sunday summer morning, but you’d rather be here... |
This home on Daniel Island in South Carolina is giving me serious ☀️+🌊+🏡 envy. Scroll to the end for a glorious hallway moment featuring the @capitalltg Mid Century pendants in aged brass. Other moments to love: the oversized Darlana ring chandelier in the kitchen (digging the idea of one central piece over an island instead of individual pendants), the double arm Boston sconces in the pantry, the iron and wood Bastian lanterns in the entrance (coming to my showroom soon!), the Tryst orb with hammered gold stems in the powder, and the classic Morgan lantern in the stairway. Visit @jacksonbuilt_custom_homes for more of their work! 💞
It’s been about a year and a half since this whitewashed pine shiplap went up, and the knots are really starting to show through now 😍. Our builder asked me quite a few times if I was sure I was going to be ok with this. 🤣 Sure, we could have primed the heck out of it, then painted coats upon coats of satin white. But, I really wanted a more authentic wood feeling in this space. So we chose to whitewash it with a 75/25 mix of paint and water. This kept it feeling bright and fresh, but also allowed some authentic wood grain and knots to show through. It’s a good solution if you’re not going for that polished shiplap style. ⚓️
Happy Sunday! It's been 100 degrees + here in the metro Philly/south Jersey area the last several days...
I was at a beautiful Puerto Rican wedding yesterday enjoying time with friends and was in awe at how simple and yet beautiful the table decor was!
All you need is a few seashells to decorate with since shells are already such a beautiful and natural element.

For those of you who are observant probably noticed I have changed my Instagrams name from Coastal_House to bates.cottage. I felt that it was time for a change and to incorporate Bates into this page as it’s about to become an even more significant part of my life. Mitch and I are getting married this year and I am becoming a Bates. It’s amazing to finally be able for us to get married and live under the same roof with the same name. Thank you for following this first part of our journey and I’m excited to continue to sharing our home with you all!
What is it about the color blue So peaceful and soothing to the eyes. Color is such an important aspect to photography because it can set the tone, and express so many different emotions. Blue is a color that is focused on a lot in creating mindful photo art. Beautiful blue and teal waters of the Bahamas create an instant coastal feeling wherever you are. Notice when you’re looking at this color how relaxed it can make you feel. Be sure to also check out the new Coastal Elegance Collection now up on MPA!
We live at the beach to relax, unwind, and let the world go by without us for a little bit. There is a timelessness about the beach. A long soak in a hot tub can do the same. It rejuvenates us. Allows us take the world on with new vigor. Our towels and rugs allow just a few moments more of that peace and quiet that we crave every now and again.
Sunday mornings should always be the laziest day of the week. It’s 10am and we’ve only just rolled out of bed to seek out some food and of course, coffee. What’s your usual Sunday look like
