Last year, I left the regular 9-5 with some confusion about what I stood for and how to articulate it. I finally have it.
I’m going to rewind a little:
I left uni in 2012 with massive balls; a clear vision and path in front of me. I could see the dream, I knew what to do, I was going to get it.
I moved to London - I wanted to work for the biggest and best agencies. I interned at many well known places (I *now* know, that this didn’t mean those places were great. They just had famous names.)
I lived in a dingy flat share, for £200 a week with x2 drug addicts.(No joke) I was being paid around £600-800 a month. (In 2011, I lived in a studio at £380 a week!) I used to catch the Megabus 🤢 I was lucky enough to have solid savings and a healthy bank balance to have this privilege. Needless to say; London’s shine wore off quite quickly 😒
It took me f****** ages to get a job. Along the way, that drive, confidence and clarity of self wore away. (This isn’t a pity party, just a reflection on my path.) I finally got a job in Manchester for a 14k salary, in 2013. Then I got another job in Leeds, for a 16k salary 4 months later.
The shit salaries aren’t relevant. (Or are they) What I know is, *before* the working world had it’s way; I always had extreme levels of motivation, a penchant for going all in or not at all. The ability to set a goal and go for it and truly believe anything was possible. I didn’t doubt my skills or my abilities.
At one time, I had “I believe anything is possible if you put your mind to it,” on my CV. (Double lol 🌝) I believed the world was for me and I could take it, if I worked really damn hard. I trusted that the industry would take me under its wing and show me the best way.
That spirit and attitude fizzled out of me...through the trials of the “dream” that we call “a job.” So, when you see me saying out loud that I want to change the way this industry is; trust that I mean it.
And know, that when I say I want to do better and create something better for designers as well as brands, I mean that too.
This industry should encourage, motivate and inspire. We’re in the *business* of creating and moulding the future.
Let’s do it better.
