When I was asked to perform at #dancingdiasporafestival i was so excited. Mainly because i have so many creative babies waiting to be birthed and this was a perfect opportunity to create and share something new. And yet i doubted myself and wondered how capable i was to flex a particular muscle that hasn’t been used much in the last several years. I heard a voice say, just revamp an older piece of work that you know is good. But then a more encouraging voice kept saying it’s time to create something new. You can do it. Trust your process. Trust your purpose. Trust your creative flow. And my new work flowed through me quickly and easily. In one month I was able to create something that’s not only new but perhaps one of my favorite solo creations thus far. I’m so glad i didn’t let fear and insecurities get in the way of pushing past my comfort zone. Ironically, trusting my higher self aka #lovesvoice ended up being one of the major themes of my new creation, She Speaks. Which I look forward to sharing with more of y’all via upcoming performance opportunities I’m manifesting🤞🏾☺️ But mainly I’m sharing all of this to remind you that if you have a gift you were meant to share, it doesn’t really matter how long of a break you take from it. Of course our choices impact the way things develop, but my point is, this thing that is perhaps a calling and brings you joy is simply a part of you. And if you don’t channel your creativity via inspired pathways, trust me when i say it will negatively impact your emotional, spiritual and physical health. On the flip side, as you continue growing, evolving and expanding on your journey, that evolution will reflect itself in your creations. So to all my artists out there or anyone being called to create something but for whatever reason is hesitant to move forward, i want you to know that i believe in you. Whatever is stopping you from doing the thing your heArt is crying out for, i encourage you to do it. Ask for help, pray, meditate, make a plan, dream, take action or do whatever makes sense to you. I keep reminding you cuz i need reminders myself 😝 and we are in this together 💕 ... c

We are still reeling from the magical night of comunidad and performance that took place at Dancing Diaspora Festival. We are so grateful to have shared the space with other artistxs who revel in powerful insistence and resistance. Gracias a @marinamagalicious for cultivating comunidad and welcoming us to share part in it. Also many thanks to @elizabethandreaa_ for stepping in and bringing her magical energy to our work. Still feeling the high from #DancingDiasporaFestival ⚡️⚡️ •

In 48 hours I embark on a big journey, a 3-month trip to Europe where I will be completing my MFA Dance program, presenting my Thesis projects, and taking a MUCH-deserved vacation with my dear husband. •
•
Oh, and did I mention it’s my birthday in 5 days??? I’m in a deep space of reflection, feeling so much gratitude for this past year around the sun, one that saw the (explosive!) growth of the #DancingDiaspora community and its latest iteration in the first-ever Dancing Diaspora Festival.
•
•
I mean, look at these humans in these photos!!!! Aren’t they some of the most beautiful creatures you’ve ever seen?? There’s just this aura around everyone in these images, one of profound joy, freedom and assertion. They say “I am here. In this body. And this body is sacred.” •
•
Thank you to each of the teachers, performers, panelists, and students who are shining through these photos and who came to the festival. •
•
HUGE thank you to my querido marido @bobgsnapshots for capturing these photos as only he could have done. •
•
Onward and forward minha gente!!! See you on the other side of summer LA ✌🏽💋 •

I am at a loss for words about the #DancingDiasporaFestival ... ✨✨ •
•
Recently in my work I’ve been asking myself, how can I cultivate my artistic vision in a way that brings others along with me? That creates space for each of us to tell our own stories? At the festival MissFunk said that was what the festival for her was all about, each of us being able to tell our own stories through movement. I couldn’t agree more. •
•
I put together my dream line up of artists— some of my first mentors ( @anamariaalvarezct @missfunk79 ), visionary elders (@lindayudin @verapassos3 ), brilliant artist-scholars (@ladychuva @def_artinmotion ), ferocious teachers (@rachelhernandezdance @katihernandez_cubandance ), awe-inspiring performers (@tatianazamir @primerageneraciondance @soynalgona ), forever sidekick (@mrsalligray ), and dearest of collaborators (@siempre_floreciendo ). All 15 of you blew me away and shined so brilliantly in your spaces!! I lost track of the amount of times people came up to me throughout the weekend to thank me for this space, but truly, it wouldn’t have been possible without you. •
•
For me, that’s what Dancing Diaspora is all about at the end of the day. Celebrating the vibrancy and resiliency of our diasporic cultures, rooted in African, indigenous and Latinx traditions, embodied through the diverse diasporic community we are a part of. •
•
Being from Brazil based in the US means that I’m conjuring up homeland over and over again through my body, understanding belonging as something that it is generated from the inside out. So many of us (have to) do this— as immigrants, undocumented people, people of color, and queer people. •
•
I hope that the festival this weekend, and the #DancingDiaspora community class each week, conjured up this home-space para todxs.
You belong in your body, your body belongs in this terra. ⚡️⚡️ •
•
Special thanks to all 30+ artists— performers, teachers, speakers, musicians, photographers, videographers, DJ— and the amazing staff at @pieterperformancespace especially @dorothy_jeanne & @naiamcd •
•
For now, #DancingDiaspora is going on break! We’ll be back in September, more info to come 🙌🏽💃🏽

@pieterperformancespace is the site of many of my experiences of healing, hope, and freedom. that wood floor supports miraculous moments like honest and vulnerable community conversations with @genderjusticela and free afro-latinx #dancingdiaspora classes with @marinamagalicious. i am so grateful for that space, for everyone whose seen and unseen labor makes it possible. on tongva land, in a city founded by afro-mexicans where #therentistoodamnhigh and gentrification continues colonization, pieter is an oasis. i'm just too grateful for words. [first photo: an altar with photos of ancestors, sunflowers, sister outsider by gamba adisa (audre lorde), borderlands/la frontera: the new mestiza by gloria anzaldúa, icons and an ileke for Ọṣun above a white bowl of water. second photo: "It's yours. Art heals hearts, nourishes our souls and awakens collective consciousness. I feel myself shapeshifting into a new woman every time I connect with my true self and allow Spirit to move through me. And it can feel just as magical to bear witness to another soul who is channeling something greater than themselves, while being vulnerable and brave enough to share it with others. This is one of the many reasons I’m humbled, honored and thrilled to be performing at #DancingDiasporaFestival. This two day festival is a combination of guest speakers, performances and community dance classes hosted by the lovely @marinamagalicious. And as if that news wasn’t sweet enough, the entire festival is FREE!!! Save the date lovely ones 💜💜💜 June 1st & 2nd ✨✨✨

#DancingDiaspora community class was something I dreamed up 2 years ago as an attempt to share the kind of dance practice I wanted to have, one that was rooted in ancestral Latinx dances and opened possibilities of moving and being in the world. These last 2 years have been a journey of coming home into my own body and finding home in this beautiful diasporic city of Los Angeles where so many of our ancestral lands and practices converge, especially for those of us who are Latin American. •

•
What does it mean to queer geography? To mobilize borders and find the flux and porousity that is in fact always present no matter how thick the walls are? What does it mean to dance in community, honoring individual expression and the collective body? To find possibilities in the convergence of past, present, future... invoking ancestral memory to create new paths forward? To dance diaspora is to locate the body as generator of knowledge to ALL these questions. I hope to move with and learn from your body at this festival... ✨🙏🏽✨ •

I hope to move with and learn from your body at this festival... ✨🙏🏽✨ • • • SAVE THE DATE! #DancingDiasporaFestival June 1-2 , 2019 at @pieterperformancespace featuring ALL FREE events: performances by @soynalgona @siempre_floreciendo @verapassos3 @rachelhernandezdance @primerageneraciondance @def_artinmotion @tatianazamir @mrsalligray , a panel featuring Dana Fitchett, @ladychuva @lindayudin of @viverbrasildance and @anamariaalvarezct of @contra_tiempo , and workshops by Vera Passos, Rachel Hernandez, @katihernandez_cubandance @missfunk79 & yours truly, open jam dj’ed by @sizzle007 🙌🏽🔥 Check out the full schedule online, link in bio ⚡️⚡️ • • • #decolonizethebody #danceandchangemaker #diasporicdance #diaspora #contemporarydance #ladance #ladanceclass #danceclass #dancefestival #latinx #vamo #migente #artivista #free #freeclass #freeshow • • • Shout out to @celesexxxy @lleannaa and Bianca Medina for gracing this flier with their beauty ✨✨ photo by @bobgsnapshots

Two years ago I started the Dancing Diaspora weekly class from a somewhat selfish desire to give myself the kind of dance practice I wanted and wasn’t finding in LA. It was also an attempt to make sense of a lifetime of nomadic living and dancing, a body born in Brazil and raised throughout Latin America and the US, trained in ballet, modern, Samba, Afro-Cuban, capoeira and everything in between. •

What did it mean to live in diaspora? To be deeply rooted in the culture of somewhere that was physically distant, but to be conjuring up that place everyday through dance and music and speaking and breathing? What a dance practice that reflected all this be like? •
•
•
I could’ve never imagined 2 years ago that these questions would have led to the huge, vibrant and growing #DancingDiaspora community that exists today, and this beautiful @voyagelamag feature about the journey. •

I want to say a deep OBRIGADA to the hundreds of movers who join me week after week on Thursday nights for community class— the core go-ers who don’t miss a week, the busy folks who come when they can, the new-comers who are just now hearing about it, and the people who keep supporting from afar. And a special thank you to @jmykidd and @pieterperformancespace for inviting me to apply for the California Arts Council Grant 2 years ago and make the class free of charge to the community. ALL of the support for this growing movement is wild and humbling beyond words to me. I CANT WAIT for us all to come together, dialogue, groove, and MOVE at the first ever #DancingDiasporaFestival on Jun 1-2 at Pieter Space. Save the date y’all!!!! •
