Followers expecting photos of architecture this week will be disappointed! This morning I got up well before sunrise to stake out a spot at Zabriskie Point in @deathvalleynps - glad I did, I’ve never seen so many photographers in one place. It was chilly and rather windy (two shooters had their tripods blow over), but the dawn light was amazing. After looking over the sea of big lens DSLRs I’m happy I packed light. A rangefinder, two lenses, and the compact Lee Seven5 filter setup worked really well. I do miss my architecture rig but there’s a lot to be said for lower weight and the enjoyment of being somewhere rather than attending to the equipment. I think my wife would call that “mindfulness”. Anyway, Death Valley is a beautiful place. Off to see some more of it!

Pursuit of Hope by Indian American artist Gopaal Seyn. ” #hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: You don’t give up.” – Anne Lamott. #gopaalseyn #hopeful #betterfuture #dawn
Do you still feel younger than you thought you would by now
Or, darling, have you started feeling old yet
Don't worry, I'm sure that you're still breaking hearts
With the efficiency that only youth can harness
Now I can't think of air without thinking of you
I doubt that comes as a surprise
And I can't think of anything to dream about
I can't find anywhere to hide
And when I'm hanging on by the rings around my eyes
And I convince myself I need another
And for a minute it gets easier to pretend that you were just some lover - Love is a Laserquest
This week’s #MondayMotivation spotlight is dedicated to a family of anglers I got to meet in the early hours of my first morning in Ereke, Buton Island.
I had just woken up at our last stop before we headed to the jungle to begin data collection on a terrestrial expedition with @operation_wallacea . After days of travelling by all means of transportation, I had forgotten what jetlag or any lag meant. The air was filled with excitement, new sounds and calls, venture mode was full-on! Snatched my camera and headed to the seacoast for a routine stretch and what was a peaceful scenery by dawn while everyone (from our group) was still enjoying the comfort of their bed mattress.
This fisherman family were collecting their overnight catch which would later be sold at the local market in the village of Ereke located on the north-eastern fringes of the island. Gosh, they had caught the smallest fishes ever, yet still threw them on board on their little boat. And yes, because this is how they’d make money in order to survive. Despite all the efforts it takes to catch, collect, distribute and sell their haul.
In the not so far distance though, big fishing vessels could be seen doing their thing – collecting fish by the thousands. I had the chance to chat to these three Butonese people, regardless the lack of knowing any Indonesian bahasa. At least they had made the effort to learn basic English which helped me understand the miniature however very significant problem they were now facing.
