💎Repetition and Practice will make them master the skill of STANDING👍 Today they played dropping the balls into the funnel they delighted watching the balls come zipping down the chutes. It gives them plenty of practice at bending down, standing up again and pulling themselves back up again to play. 💪 Rachel & Hannah are learning to stand without support, gaining confidence in their balance keep going girls xxx💕
#voting is personal and the ability for a voter to cast a secret ballot is important. In order to provide opportunities for more voters to cast a ballot unassisted, the #RichmondCountyBoardofElection is sponsoring #IVoteMyVote on Saturday, Oct 27th from 9-4 at the Municipal Building Advance Voting Center located at 535 Telfair Street.
Additional resources for voters with #disabilities who want or need accommodations will be provided. Additional resources include:
- A practice voting unit including an audio ballot
- Poll workers from Walton Options for Independent Living available to provide instruction and encouragement
- The addition of more voting units with audio ballots
I had the opportunity yesterday to sit down with the Executive Director of a local organization called Community SEEDS.
This organization is one of a handful of Parent and Family Coalitions around Washington State that work to educate, advocate and empower families and individuals living with developmental disabilities. They are currently working to launch a Cat Cafe in Zillah, Washington, which will provide employment opportunities and training to adults with intellectual developmental disabilities.
Since learning of Malachi's SB diagnosis, I've been searching for opportunities locally to get involved in advocacy efforts. I want our family to be another voice in this community sharing our story, with all its triumphs, challenges and obstacles, because there are many ways in which our communities, states and our country as a whole could improve in how we treat, care for, and invest in programs, services and research to better the lives of those living with conditions like Malachi. But change won't happen unless there are those voices speaking out... unless there are a lot of voices speaking out.
I'm happy I had the chance to learn more about this group and the state network of family coalitions. I hope to get more involved in the future.

7 Years of DLM - (CIRCA 2012)⠀
Ariana Cockrell – Brain Injury/Hemiparesis⠀
At 2 1/2 years old Ariana had a traumatic brain injury which resulted in a subdural hematoma that basically crushed her brain. Ariana had to have a large portion of the left side of her brain removed. The damage to her brain was so great that the Neurosurgeon was doubtful that she’d make it out of surgery. Due to the massive swelling of her brain, for the next few weeks Ariana was placed on a medically induced coma and a breathing machine. Again the prognosis was bleak, at best her doctors said she’d be a “vegetable”; unable to walk, talk or eat on her own. A few weeks later Ariana was breathing on her own and the swelling reduced enough that they could wake her from the coma. Ariana had several more surgeries in the months that followed in order to place a VP shunt to help her body recycle the cerebral spinal fluid that surrounds her brain as well as to place a mesh plate in the left side of her skull that was removed during her original life saving surgery. Ariana had to learn to walk, talk, eat and play again.⠀
While the brain injury has left Ariana with a seizure disorder, developmental delays and hemiparesis of the right side of her body it did not take away her strong will nor her kind heart. She has had to undergo several additional surgeries over the last 14 years, many of which were to repair the skull defect and subsequent infections. Not once has she complained or asked “why me” instead she puts on a smile that brightens every room she’s in and is contagious to everyone she meets.⠀
Ariana is a Junior in high school and recently attended her first Prom. She loves people and offers a hug, a warm smile and a sweet hello to everyone she meets. Ariana would like to work with children when she finishes school. She is proof that with a strong will, faith and a positive outlook that you can persevere through the most dire of circumstances.⠀
You’re amazing Ariana!⠀

One of the most rewarding parts of Laura's Greetings is receiving messages from individuals that tell us they hope their young children can be Laura's Greetings artists someday.
That's what we are all about, showing that disability is not inability and that when given the chance, individuals experiencing disabilities can shine. Thank you for being part of this journey with us ❤

"We know that even though we have no pity for anyone, our sympathy is not empathy. We don’t actually know what it is like to live with a visual impairment every single moment of the day." [email protected]kassylmaloney
Kassy Maloney, a sighted Orientation & Mobility Instructor, talks about the balance of pushing boundaries while supporting independence for visually impaired people. Link in bio.
Description: Kassy during an O&M session is walking behind her student who is learning to navigate with the white cane. Both brunettes with shoulder-length hair are casually dressed in jeans and flats. Kassy is wearing a black tank top and her student is wearing a green top. Some green foliage and city buildings can be seen in the background. It looks like they just came down a set of cement stairs.
