Tonight I got to experience one very cool item on my bucket list... bioluminescence. When I tell you it was pure magic, I’m not exaggerating. The smile never left my face!! The water was alive with color and energy and in the pitch black of the night, the electric teal danced brightly with every move. .
Bioluminescence is the light given off by living organisms - like fireflies and angler fish! This water was filled with trillions of dinoflagellates (plankton) that emit light when disturbed. There are only a handful of places in the world where you can immerse yourself in this incredible natural phenomenon, and Florida’s Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge on the East Coast is one of them, located about 1.25 hours east of Orlando. .
I took a tour with @getupandgokayaking and got to experience kayaking in the pitch black of a hot summer night, with frequent (and gorgeous) streaks of lightning painting the sky. The bioluminescence was vibrant and was everywhere, including under the kayak and looked like the galaxy!Little fish darted around the kayaks, making the water come alive with light. A manatee announced his presence with a tremendous splash. Dolphins lazily played nearby and were showing off their grace. Jellyfish were electrified when caught in the little nets we had. And the best part was watching the front of the kayak plow through the water the whole time, scattering bright, big color in a wide V around us. That’s this first photo. And it doesn’t do it justice AT ALL. It’s remarkably hard to photograph, and I’m shocked I even got *one.*
I got spooked by a manatee, had little fish literally jumping over my head, I saw dolphins and I had the sky open up on me and hit me with a deluge of water, making the surface glow. It was a remarkably positive experience and I’m so glad I went. ❤️

Something I wish I still had like I used to is my imagination. Yes, I can still imagine and so can you. But imagining as an adult now is more of “pretending”, as when you were little, imagining was real. Your imagination was another world that you could escape to when you got bored. That is my favorite thing about having a career working with kids; the mermaid high fives, 🧜🏼♀️ the rainbow stars in the sky, 💫 the dolphin party under there water, 🐬 the crazy crocodile coming to get you! 🐊 I miss having that imagination. 💞 But I do certainly love the creativity in being able to make another child’s imagination blossom from my pretend. ✨ Picture 1: @sesameplace in 1999 🌈 Picture 2: Back yard pool 1999 🏊🏻♀️
