I offered to cover an on call last night. So we got to go to work at 1am. It was minus 7 on the way home 🥶 •
I’ve had a good 3 hours sleep and I’m raring to go (this is a lie I am exhausted!) but the morning jaunt did remind me that I’m lucky not to be in an ITU bed, and that ITU Nurses are badasses who know loads! •
My only availability for aesthetics is now 23rd Feb. Also, if you can stay wrapped in your pyjamas today, I would! •

Baptist Health Employee Spotlight on Denise Winstead, RN in Endoscopy: 👩⚕️ "I became a nurse 14 1/2 years ago. I actually went back to school a little later in life than most. But nursing was always there in my heart, and I had a desire to follow that dream. I love nursing and helping others. I started my nursing career on OB. It was an amazing experience and a great place to start my life-long journey of nursing. I later moved to Endoscopy. I have been in the Endoscopy department for 13 years. They are truly like family. I am blessed to be a part of such a wonderful, caring group of people. Outside of nursing, I have raised three boys that I am extremely proud of. I also have a sweet granddaughter, Ellie, who just turned two. She keeps me busy and my heart full. I consider myself very blessed to have two wonderful families, one at home and one at work."

What's your understanding Some Drs here advise stopping at least 24hrs before if not 2 weeks before the first scope while others say not to. My son was told to stop as he was already having little relief of reflux signs on the PPI he had been on for a year. He was off for 8 weeks before the scope so no acid battle or extra strong detox reflux was happening by the time of the biopsies. He was at his natural baseline. Next scope will be with the ppi & dairy elimination. #EosinophilicEsophagitis #EoE #eosinophilicdisease #egid #endoscopy #endoscopynurse #gastroenterology

When you work in the field of endoscopy, your day does NOT consist of shinny and new things. And if any of it were to end up in your hair or on your face, that would be a very bad day. So this small gesture of Christmas cheer makes us happy.😊 And our patients found it amusing. So win-win. And @friesenrn is always game to look like a fool with me. #endoscopy #endoscopynurse #rns #christmascheer
"If you are a frequent flier of the endoscopy unit you are going to LOVE this [back-opening dress]. It’s such a good idea I can’t believe I’ve never come across it before. When you’re in hospital it’s when you need comfort most and it’s the hardest to find. This would be brilliant for anyone that has an ileostomy or a colostomy.” Such a wonderful endorsement from the incredible YouTube presenter Hannah Hodgson. I’ve always felt “adequate” at IVs, but any hard sticks would typically be too much for me. One of the reasons I’m so excited about working in Endoscopy is a chance to get REALLY GOOD at IV starts. When I’m working as an intake nurse, I end up starting 5+ IVs in a day! In the past 3 weeks of orientation, I’ve come to realize that if I can see and feel it, I can hit it. When I can feel it but can’t see it (or vice versa), that’s when I struggle. I’m trying to watch and learn all the IV tricks from my co-workers, but feel free to leave any advice in the comments below! 👇🏼 I’m probably not the only one who could use some IV tips for difficult sticks! ❤️
Pic: after getting poked myself for labs earlier this week.
Last week a 9yo MN Bichon Frise had presented with a two-week history of gross haematuria (bloody urine). The dog was otherwise healthy and well. The urine analysis hadn’t identified any signs of bacteria, crystals or neoplastic cells to explain his clinical presentation. Abdominal imaging had also failed to identify any obvious causes (e.g. bladder stones or mass lesions) affecting his upper or lower urinary tract including the kidneys, ureters or bladder.
I was called in to perform a urethrocystoscopy to assess the urethra, bladder and ureteric openings using a 3.0mm fiberoptic flexible cystoscope. This was an extremely challenging case due to the huge volumes of blood absorbing all the light being illuminated into the bladder. After extensive lavaging, fresh blood was eventually visualised being ejected into the bladder from the right ureterovesicular junction. This most likely represents a condition called idiopathic haematuria, and is often considered a ‘diagnosis of exclusion’. There are no breed, age, or sex predilections. Many patients will have hematuria as their only symptom; however, urinary obstruction, lower urinary signs from blood clots or systemic signs of anemia can also occur. Colleagues at @amcny have also used Yunnan Baiyao (a haemastatic agent used during wartime) with a reported success rate of 10-15% in confirmed cases.
This dog was started on an ACE-I in attempt to reduce intrarenal pressure and assess his response over the next 7-10 days. If the bleeding continues, then interventional sclerotherapy will likely be the next step in managing this case. Very interesting case!

PUÑOS 🦋 #stridabike #goodvibes #endoscopynurse #gotowork "¿Cuándo sabes que has madurado me preguntó ella.
Tan solo quiero vivir.
Todo lo que la existencia me traiga."
This couldn’t get anymore accurate! ...But somehow I love my job! 👩🏼⚕️ A year ago I was extremely burn out and unhappy. Now I am inspired and enjoy coming through the doors to work. I am so grateful for the patients I meet everyday and their stories, the staff I work with who are so supportive and are more like friends to me than colleagues and for the learning opportunities there are everyday! 👩🏼⚕️ 💩 🚑💉💊🏨 #reflecting #ayearago #endoscopynurse #learning #grateful #cringepost
The new kid.
🔥Burnout tip: arrive early.
You don’t need that gut-twisting, panic sensation of always being late, get it out of your life!
There’s lots of tricks you can try:
•setting multiple alarms
•laying out your clothes the night before
•if it’s somewhere you’ve never been before, scope it out days in advance.
•set the appointment in your phone for 15 minutes earlier to allow for changes in traffic and finding parking.
Once you make a habit of being early, being on time will feel late. 😄 Worst case scenario, you’ll just kill some time in your car before heading in. 🙌🏼
Orientation starts tomorrow so I went on a little drive to check out where we’ll be meeting. Isn’t it beautiful (This is just for day 1, we meet on the hospital campus the rest of the week.) This gave me a chance to see how long it takes to drive there from my house, find the employee parking, and get rid of some of the first day jitters by feeling prepared. 👍🏼
Early, on-time, or late, which one are you
