Early visionary work by George Washington Mark. A painting, I pined for but it wasn’t in the cards. Painted in 1848, but looks as if painted in 1948! And that back is as good as the front‼️GEORGE WASHINGTON MARK (American, 1795-1879)

George Washington Mark, sometimes called "Count Mark" or "The Count", was born in New Hampshire in 1795. He opened an art gallery in his home devoted exclusively to his own paintings. The catalogue for Mark's third exhibition, held in 1850, lists 76 works, including lot 1198, “Greenfield Street by Moonlight” (1848). Many of the works listed in the 1850 catalogue have been lost and no works dated after this time have been discovered.
Little is known about the late years of Mark's life except that he became decidedly more eccentric. It’s rumored he purchased his seven hundred-pound metal #coffin eight years before his death, so as not to burden anyone else with such a detail, and used the top of it as a work table. He died in 1879.
