‘The Queen’s theatre at the Petit Trianon, which played so big a part in the thoughts of all the habitués, stood near the palace: a beautiful hall built at enormous expense, joined to the great drawing room by a painted canvas passage. The interior gleamed in Marie Antoinette’s colours: white picked out with pale blue and gilt. Clusters of extravagant boxes gaped through a thicket of baroque ornamentation, fluted pilasters rose to the magnificent ceiling, cupids and other fantasies loved by the Queen intruded everywhere. Marie Antoinette’s coat-of-arms crowned the wide sweep of the loaded proscenium, and armchairs of the most luxurious manufacture seated the noble audience. The stage was a model of Continental ingenuity and the Queen’s scene-painters worked regardless of expense. Here, while France rumbled, and famine-stricken scarecrows died beyond the charmed walls, the thoughtless daughter of the great Maria Thérèsa danced and sang and sought laughs as a light comedienne.’ E. E. P. Tisdall.

The final result of an extensive restoration of this beautiful late 19th century frame. The top and bottom running patterns were completely missing and the raw timber and composition ornaments had been crudely painted over with gold paint. The paint was removed revealing the original gilded finish, which was unfortunately in very bad condition. New ornaments were chosen and made from compo and laid in the freshly gessoed timber ridges, and the frame was re-finished to match the original damaged finish as closely as possible. I’ve been developing my abstract landscape theme. What do you guys think of the larger trees ✨ This time, I added some paint to my gilding adhesive to make it easier to see where I’m putting the gold flakes. In this video, I applied @speedball_art gilding size to my dry acrylic pour with a precision applicator, and then stuck the composite gold leaf flakes on top, sealing it with @art_resin. 🌲 This one will go up on my site and in my Etsy store tonight, and will be installed at @bumblelosaltos tomorrow. 12” x 12” mixed media on canvas. #fluidartwork
