January 18th 2016, The Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey died at the age of 67 in New York City from complications arising from rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia. Frey co-founded the Eagles in 1971 with Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. After the breakup of the Eagles in 1980, Frey embarked on a successful solo career and went on to score the Top 40 hits 'The One You Love', 'Smuggler's Blues', 'The Heat Is On', and 'You Belong to the City'. #theeaglesband #glenfrey #vinylcollection

This week in January 1977 the Eagles had the number one album in the US with Hotel California. The title song of the same name was written by Don Felder, Glenn Frey, and Don Henley. The song is about materialism and excess with California used as the setting, but it could relate to anywhere in America. Don Henley said: "Some of the wilder interpretations of that song have been amazing. It was really about the excesses of American culture and certain girls we knew. But it was also about the uneasy balance between art and commerce." he later "It's a song about the dark underbelly of the American Dream and about excess in America which was something we knew about." And a few years later he said, "It's a song about a journey from innocence to experience." This won the 1977 Grammy for Record of the Year. The band did not show up to accept the award, as Don Henley did not believe in contests. Timothy B. Schmit had just joined the band, and he says they watched the ceremony on TV while they were rehearsing. #HotelCalifornia, #Eagles, #GlenFrey, #donHenley

Incubating the Eagles at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA. Linda Ronstadt -- 11 Grammys, 3 AMAs, 2 ACMs, and an Emmy -- just a few of the accomplishments of this post-60's rock phenom who would emerge as a forerunner in the Los Angeles country rock movement. In 1971, she was coming off of a Grammy nomination for her hit single, "Long, Long Time" and looking for a new backing band when she heard Don Henley playing drums at the Troubadour. At the time, she was living with songwriter J.D. Souther who had a group, Longbranch/Pennywhistle, that included young guitarist Glen Frey. The previous year, Henley and Frey met at the Troubadour, and the two frequented the club as friends. As if some kind of alignment with the cosmos, Ronstadt convinced Henley and Frey to join her backing band along with guitarist Bernie Leadon who was coming out of a breakup with a band known as The Flying Burrito Brothers that once featured country rock pioneer, Gram Parsons. She would also bring in bassist Randy Meisner who had appeared for a stint with local rockers, Poco, whose story alone constitutes its own series. In 1971, Ronstadt's four-member backing band would appear on her self-titled album and begin to form a special chemistry as a group, going on to form the Eagles. Members of the Eagles testify that Ronstadt was extremely supportive and understanding of their formation of the Eagles as a stand-alone group, and thanks to Ronstadt's vision and clout, a band came together at the Troubadour that would go on to literally write music history. For the Troubadour, this would be just one of many chapters in a storied music history that carries on to this day in West Hollywood.
