What a varied week it’s been...
One of the advantages of being a GP trainee is the sheer variety of options available to expand my special interests.
So in the last 7 days I’ve camped in a field for the @exilemedics festival, expanding my knowledge of wilderness medicine; attended a course by @rcpsych to begin the process of approval under the MHA; had a day @plymuni planning my dissertation project; and then did some actual GP work too!!

Had to hold back on the lifestyle medicine front today but it did remind me how amazing modern medicine is! Lifestyle medicine is an amazing movement and is essential to the management of chronic disease but I think sometimes we forget that if you are unfortunate enough to have a diagnosis like cancer or a heart attack lifestyle medicine isn’t going to help you! The ONLY thing that will get you better is modern medicine - surgery, chemotherapy, medication etc -

... Doctors get mental illness too...
.... Mental illness spares no one ...
We all suffer mental pain on some level at some point in our lives. Whether that fits the diagnostic criteria for depression or anxiety or expresses itself as relationship breakdowns, addictions or unhealthy food habits. I know because I’ve been there with most of the above!
Throughout medical school and GP training I struggled with anxiety and panic attacks. I’ve been on antidepressants. I’ve had counselling. I’ve been to depths that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. But I was one of the lucky ones - I had incredible support in my family and friends and felt able to speak up and get help. On the other side of it now I am incredibly grateful for the experience as it given me so much strength and born my passion for health and wellness ❤️.
Today is about raising awareness and making it OK to speak up and get that help they need. We need to break this TABOO associated with mental illness! ...
Perhaps you might open up to someone today about your struggles ...
If you feel you want to speak to someone then your GP is always a good first step. Remember it’s confidential and they’re there to help - and stress/worry/sadness is absolutely NOT a waste of our time ❣ ....
Love to all x

Today is World Mental Health Day to increase awareness about mental health illnesses and reduce stigma.
As a GP, I see and support a lot of people suffering from conditions such as depression and anxiety on a daily basis. Often people suffer silently and alone for months to years before seeking help.
Depression is common affecting over 300 million people worldwide.
Common symptoms include feeling irritable, low mood, not enjoying things you used to, lacking motivation, unable to concentrate and problems sleeping. It also can also impact on your eating habits either eating too much or too little.
If you or someone you know may be affected by depression, it is important to speak to someone. You can approach your family, friends, colleagues and of course your doctor.
Often people are hesitant to ask for help for multiple reasons. They may feel worried about not been taken seriously or scared about medication or not convinced about counselling. Despite this, I urge you to talk to someone because this may be your first step to recovery. It may not happen overnight and will probably be journey but one step in the right direction is a brave and bold start.
In Australia, there are also resources such as @beyondblueofficial blue and lifeline (13 11 14) to help.
In the UK, there are several mental health lines such as SANE, Mind or The Samaritans (telephone numbers on this link https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/mental-health-helplines).
Thoughts about fitting in exercise to your daily life... 💭 .
I completely get how hard it is to fit exercise into busy lifestyles. Work, commuting, kids and other commitments all mean that exercise often gets pushed to the bottom of the priority list
However, being fit and active not only improves your physical health, it also makes you feel really good! The best thing is that you don’t have to spend a huge amount of time exercising to reap the benefits. Just half an hour a day is enough. How much time do you spend in front of the TV or scrolling through Instagram Could you use some of that time more productively
I think the key to fitting it in is to exercise when it works for you. If you are an early bird, set an alarm and do it before work. If you prefer to exercise after work then do it then. Could you fit it in elsewhere into your routine Don’t stress about doing it every day, if you miss it then tomorrow is another day. Exercise isn’t another stick to beat yourself with. What really matters is consistency and commitment to being active over time
I went for an impromptu run after work today (guys, I finished early at 5.30pm, this almost never happens I was too excited! 😂) and I feel so good for the fresh air and cardio. How do you fit it all in

Repost @cr_uk .
Did you know that alcohol consumption is a risk factor for breast cancer .
Alcohol can increase levels of osteogen and other hormones associated with hormone receptor positive breast cancer. .
Alcohol can also cause DNA damage meaning it’s harder for our cells to repair themselves. .
The public health guidance is for men and women to drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week. .
For advice on reducing your alcohol consumption, speak to your GP.

Get a notebook and make lists! Can’t tell you how much better I feel when I’ve written a good to do list (and put a few things on I can cross off straight away😂). Not only do lists make you more productive. Often the amount of things we have to do can seem unmanageable so writing them down and then breaking them down into what I want to get done today/this week/this month suddenly makes it all more manageable!
Also if you’re struggling to sleep and have stress or anxiety problems, keep your notepad next to your bed and write down your worries to address in the morning. This will help you stop thinking about them and get to sleep.

Thorny problems to deal with at work have kept me thinking all evening..being a GP can go from the mundane to dealing with issues of life and death in the space of 5 minutes. A little beauty gives the soul some respite 💗

Today I have read an incredible opinion piece on why self care for women in medicine is not about spa days and yoga classes, it’s about saying no, setting boundaries and negotiating at work
The article talks about how in medicine we are high achievers that put our patients needs above our own, to our own detriment. I think that working for the NHS makes this even harder. When you work for a state funded organisation that is struggling to keep up with patient need, we are constantly told to be more resilient, and to deliver more with fewer resources. And because we are high achieving, diligent and conscientious doctors we strive to do this above all else. But we only have so much to give .
I burnt out working in anaesthetics, and I now understand the importance of creating a work environment that enables me to balance the needs of service provision, but also that of my own mental health. As I look for a GP post now I will be negotiating hard so that I can continue to feel that I am able to work hard but not at my own expense. Our careers are long and hard fought for, but I learned the hard way that no-one else is going to look after you at work
I have talked about this article in my stories because it resonated with me so much. I really recommend reading it (link in bio), even if you are not a medic, because the points made are relevant for all women in the workplace
What are your thoughts about this issue What do you think the future should be in the NHS for its staff I’d love to hear in the comments
