RUNNING OUT OF TIME TO BE HEALTHY - When i suggest self help ways to improve health, people always say “I don’t have time doc”. Of course, this resonates with me too - Working as a GP, doing Daddy Day Care twice a week, starting a business and trying to keep involved with team sport (not to mention the house renovations and weekend family activities!) means time is short and making time for health can be hard.
Sometimes a beer, pizza and Netflix is needed.
BUT there are changes you can make in life that can make the most of the time that we do have. Here’s a few to start with;
👉Play actively with your kids - get sweaty rolling around play fighting. @fitnessexplorer has great advice about this!
👉Taking a 10min brisk walk at lunchtime helps your body process lunch and wakes you up for your afternoon. 🚶♂️
👉Keep active at work - Run up the stairs or go and talk to someone rather than sending an email. Engaging face to face is more enjoyable and encourages people to be more helpful!
👉Buy a load of ‘healthy snacks’ at the start of the week (eg nuts/fruits/veg batons). It saves on time and reduces the temptation to go and buy unhealthy options during the day. 🥜
👉 Try ‘Time restricted eating’ - eating all your food within a 10hour window has great health benefits. 🕰
👉‘Snackersize’ - do small bursts of exercise whilst boiling the kettle or brushing you teeth. This is one of the easiest actions to help prevent disease. 🏃♀️
👉Finally, if 150mins of weekly exercise feels unattainable, then try some ‘High Intensity Interval Training’ workouts. There are loads of free 15-20mins HIIT videos online which can equate to an hour of gym work! There are even low impact HIIT exercises if you struggle with joint pains or mobility.
All this aside, sometimes you really do need to make time for change though. As the great quote goes, “Those who think they have no time for healthy eating will sooner or later have to find time for illness.” Edward Stanley

Last week I finally got my CCT in General Practice! For those of you that don’t know what this means, it means that I can now work independently as a GP and I am no longer a junior doctor
It’s been 10 and a half years since I graduated from medical school (pictured here on the big day complete with a fringe that well and truly lost the battle with humidity🤣)and my post graduate training has taken me a very long time to complete. In those years I’ve worked exhausting nights and weekend shifts, seen or clerked approximately eleventy billion patients (!), absolutely loved it then absolutely hated it, suffered burn out and changed speciality. I’ve dealt with horrendous, life changing events and witnessed the very best and worst of humanity at work. My job is a complete and utter privilege, but is also mentally and emotionally gruelling. I’m now married and have had 2 babies, and truthfully I am a very different person to the fresh faced graduate pictured here. I was a very high achiever at university, I graduated with honours and was an all round medical geek. I had every intention of continuing like that as I practiced medicine, but over time my priorities changed and I realised that there is much much more to life than knowing the Krebs cycle or whatever crazy eponymous syndrome happens to come up in your exam.... nothing wrong if that floats your boat, but it was a bit of a painful journey to realise that’s not what makes me feel satisfied at work
As I start my career in general practice I kind of feel like I am just starting over again, just like I was 10 years ago. No doubt there will be challenges and emotional moments, but I am really hopeful that I can create a career that I am passionate about
If you are a medical student or doctor what were your hopes and aspirations on graduation day Has your career planned out as you imagined Let me know in the comments!

We were honored November 29th to welcome KMOV Channel 4 Meteorologist Mr. Steve Templeton to our third grade class taught by Ms. Gieseke who surprised the class with this intriguing visit. #gplife #LuthEd
Excited about this but really hope that it’s done well. The study they are talking about is the DiRECT trial which had amazing results but we have to remember that this trial had a massive amount of professional support for the individuals. If this isn’t implemented on the NHS and we do a cut price option it will likely not be effective for patients and not be cost effective.
There has never been a drug trial that has managed to show such a massive reversal of type 2 diabetes, reminding us that the answer to the chronic disease epidemic is not just medication but lifestyle modification.

This spoiled brat right here! I came home yesterday to find she had torn apart a recently delivered Amazon package...then, today, she had the nerve to beg for more pumpkins! LOL!

It’s been a great week of teaching and learning! Monday was spent with >100 medical students, Tuesday in ED, Wednesday teaching senior GPs and today teaching 100 trainee GPs in Stafford 😅
Today was one of those ‘wow’ moments for me as I got to present alongside someone who I have looked up to for many years, Dr David Unwin, a pioneer for patients living wit Type 2 diabetes: -
Another nice step on the journey, for which I am so grateful 😊
We march on 🤙🏼

So today has been a good day. I had the privilege of telling a training practice that they have a 3rd approved GP trainer! The whoops that ensued were reward enough! But seriously it’s always a good day when you tell someone good news isn’t it That feeling of bringing happiness or joy is infectious. The more difficult scenario is when you haven’t got such good news- how on earth do you break that without completely annihilating someone’s self of sense and worth Part of my training is breaking bad news but to be honest it never gets easier even if it’s for something less life threatening as becoming a training practice or actual life threatening news. Years of practice mean that you learn ways in which to communicate this news and how to support the people that receive it.
There are some people that never receive this training such as middle management and yet have to carry on and do it. These are the people I wish to target with coaching- how to find insight and self awareness and learn from all experiences and Improve and better yourself.

We are thrilled to be apart of the Grande Prairie Farmers Market Christmas Show this Year!! Stop by and say hi to the lovely Gwen who will be running our booth this weekend🎄
Meet Jenn – our new amazing Business Analyst, who joined Team Gravity earlier this month. We asked her whether there was anything surprising during the hiring process, and here’s what she said: “I was surprised by how quickly things moved. I got feedback and calls regarding next steps often within the same day or just 1 day later.”
While an immediate response is not always possible, we respect the time that our candidates are putting into application process, and we are constantly working on improving our communication and timeliness. What is one thing that you wish employers would stop or start doing during interview process #gplife #careersatgravity
