- 1st get clearance from your health care provider that you are ready to exercise
- be sure you are able to properly activate your core muscles (especially TA & pelvic floor) prior to starting the class
- take the classes at your own pace & don’t hesitate to modify exercises
- make sure you are holding tension across your diastasis during any exercises that stress the core

One way I’ve tracked my progress is the fact that I’m not scared when triggers happen. They tire me out and frustrate me sometimes, but I’m not scared of them anymore. I used to feel like they would never leave, so I would resist the feelings.

Now, I know they leave. So I allow myself to sit in the feelings. Sit in the frustration and exhaustion. And then it goes away.
•
There are a lot of ways to track progress with healing. Most of the time, it needs to be tracked in the little things.
•
If you are in the thick of navigating your own healing, take a moment, and think of the little ways you can tell you’ve progressed. Write them down to remind yourself when you’re feeling like the work is slow. You’ll look back and be amazed.
•
I want to share something that has helped me immensely. Since I was 15, I have moved my body almost daily. I’m not intense with it. I just move. It helps clear my mind. I know I’ve shared this before. I haven’t really gone into detail of why it helps so much.
•
When I workout, it’s just me, my body and my mind. I get to choose how I move it. I get to focus solely on myself. That may sound a little selfish. When you have been through intense trauma, you get it though. Going years and not really thinking of yourself...you need to take time to focus solely on you. Working out is partially how I’ve taken my power back. No one is telling me how I need to move my body, except me. Sometimes I do sprints, hiit, lift heavy, max reps, steady cardio, or go for walks outside.
•
I get to make that decision. And it’s a pretty easy one.
•
If you are in the middle of trauma, or a crisis of any kind, move your body. When you start to make decisions for how you want your life to go, you’re owning your power. You’re taking charge of your life. I couldn’t start out by making big decisions. I wasn’t in a place to do so. So I started with a very small decision, and chose how I wanted to move my body. And went from there.

If you haven’t been moving your body, start today. Take a second and decide how YOU want to move it.💪🏼💪🏼

A look back shows that I have dedicated about 40 hours to physical therapy alone this last week. Healing has become a full time job on top of my already "real jobs". This accident beat up and broke me, and I lost well over 10 lbs of muscle. Now, I am slowly rebuilding my body.
-
PT for me is a full body ordeal. I have a healing femur, neck, chest, back, and hands. These days PT includes a range of things - hiking, riding the stationary bike, various exercises to improve strength, range of motion, function, and balance. Aside from working on the injured areas, I also focus on strengthening my core. But not all of PT is just exercise. I spend a good deal of time stretching, doing simple yoga poses (what I can do) , and performing breathing techniques. I also massage numerous areas impacted from the trauma and surgeries to break down scar tissue and improve mobility. I continue to have numerous appointments every week with my care team including my physical therapist, occupational therapist, various doctors, and massage therapist (@iamkimlyons). - 
Every day I am thankful to be alive, thankful for my massive improvements, and thankful to have so much support from my husband, friends, family, sponsors, and care team. Healing is not easy, but it is so much easier with a cheerleading squad 😃

Spent Friday afternoon on an 8 mile rehab hike to West Maroon Pass (~12,450 feet) with @shellydk. Pick one part: elbow, neck, toes....and set a goal - could be 10 toe raises, could be 3 thumbs and guns, could be 3 knee raises. But set a goal, do the moves, and write it down.⁣
This way, you'll have a reminder and an intention to continue.⁣
Action will move you forward. Each morning look at what you did the day before, decide if today is better or worse than yesterday (yes some days will be worse!!!!) and decide what your goal is today based on your pain, tightness, and fatigue levels.⁣

Everybody grieves differently, everyone chooses to deal with trauma and sadness differently. This day brings up a lot of anxiety for me. In past years I have relived the horrors of this day by watching the same news footage on repeat, listening to the final calls to love ones... but I have come to realize that doesn’t make the day feel anymore real for me...It’s super triggering and paralyzes me and for me it doesn’t feel right. I want to honor those around me that ran towards the danger, that didn’t make it home, that didn’t have family make it home, the people that still suffer daily from the trauma of being there ...but I don’t want to sit in the fear of that day... I want to focus on the love that was born out of that day. The way we came together for a moment in time. Our world stood still for a moment and in that moment the fragility of all of our lives became very apparent. Within that stillness we all felt the need to be present and help. Help without judgment. That feeling of empathy and the longing to help, seem to be stronger than any judgments or prejudices we might have been holding in our inner workings that day....sadly we have seemed to lose our way once again. The best way to honor those that are no longer here is to live a life rooted in love, Equality, service.. standing up for and along side marginalized peoples...in short being human, being kind and being mindful of the fragility of life and the gift of this time we have been given. Movement is healing for me so I chose to share this beautiful piece by @nycballet entitled #newbeginnings. I hope it fills your heart with a sense of renewal and hope on this difficult day. I noticed a trend of handstand practice with @feetup I think it's probably a really helpful tool, but seeing as I don't have one I thought I'd revisit some of tools I discovered during my yoga teacher training🤗.

📽 ⬆️⬆️⬆️ demonstrates how I used 2 folding chairs to help me get into a compression stand. 
Generally most of the strength needed to perform this pose comes from the arms, shoulders & core. Using the chairs is good practice to train the muscles to understand what they're supposed to do. You're supposed to stack the body 1 part at a time starting with the shoulders, upper back, mid/low back, hips & finally legs. .

Many tricks to growing and developing a good strong core. Here I am going to show you one important trick to building a stronger core. 
In this video I am doing hanging leg raises. Leg raises are actually a pretty tough exercise when done correctly. Most people will hyper extend the low back and use there hip flexors instead of engaging the abdominals. That is incorrect and can cause injury. When you use the hip flexors to raise your legs that causes over activation in the flexors - in turn causes them to be tight which pulls the hips/pelvis forward causing low back pain. What you want to do instead is..... you will notice at the beginning of my video I tuck my tail bone before raising my legs. That actives the ABDOMINALS rather then flexors. Keep tail bone tucked through out the entire exercise.

Today I taught yoga, but somedays a short walk and 15 minutes of stretching are what I fit in. My mind is active, my body does not feel as stiff, and it is easier to navigate throughout my day. Things to consider if you want to grow muscle... Most trainees hammer this so called “hypertrophy rep range” hitting 3x8-12 reps religiously. But I believe you can grow and some may even respond BETTER by going above, or perhaps below that arbitrary range. 
There is a general understanding that the factors that contribute most to muscle growth are:
1. Mechanical Tension
2. Muscle Damage
3. Metabolic Stress

All three of these things are subject to being progressively applied and each person has a different response and predisposition to each. But mechanical tension is by far the number one driver. 
These three avenues can be applied to elicit the highest hypertrophic response possible. Here are some ways to push your body to respond and build more muscle. 
1. Mechanical Tension - increase duration of sets, increase quality reps, progress your load. In that order. So start with higher sets ex. 5x8. Once you can do those sets and reps with good form then move to 4x15. You will have to adjust your load in order to keep proper form for all sets and reps. 
2. Muscle Damage - increase the duration of the eccentric portion of the rep and apply techniques like super-sets or drop-sets. 
3. Metabolic Stress - Blood flow restriction, high rep sets (light weight), band work, compound sets. 
Each of these can be overloaded or increased to some capacity. A gradual increased intensity will drive growth. So if you are struggling for growth but only pulling the same lever every time you train, consider that there may be other factors to which your body could be more responsive. That being said, always apply tension and intensity first. And the point of this is to switch it up. Do not get stuck in one mode. 💋✌️
