Berlin: Extremist firm supplied guards at German concentration camp memorial (2/18/2019) “Berlin (DPA) -- Employees from a right-wing extremist security company were partly used for guard duty at Nazi concentration camp memorial sites near Berlin. People from the company were employed for a total of six shifts, a spokesman for the Brandenburg Memorials Foundation confirmed on Saturday. Brandenburg is the state that surrounds the German capital. The spokesman was confirming a report in the local newspaper, the Maerkische Allgemeine.
The security company from the eastern city of Cottbus was hired by the officially commissioned company as a subcontractor. The memorials foundation has asked the responsible security company to discontinue its business relations with the subcontractor. The incident would be investigated further, the spokesman said.” #berlin #mexico #farright #international #monitors #security #holocaust #investigate

BOOK REVIEW: I really wanted to love this book because the plot itself is beautiful and one of those stories that must be told. But I was left feeling underwhelmed. It seemed so rushed that I had a hard time getting into it and had to push myself to finish it. The scenes in the book just ended or changed abruptly. The writing was flat and the book did not evoke any emotions in me like a book set during the Holocaust would. To me it was as if the author was trying to create these emotional moments but left me feeling... meh. I think the worst part for me was how one-dimensional the main characters felt. I read it but unlike the harrowing events during the Holocaust that will always be etched in the fiber of history, this book is easily forgettable. ⭐️⭐️/ 5

Before he became the 34th president of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower served as a five-star General in the Army during World War II.
In April 1945, Eisenhower arrived at the Ohrdruf concentration camp during its liberation to bear personal witness to what had occurred during the Holocaust.
Eisenhower arranged for various other influential Americans and elected officials to see the evidence of the camps for themselves, as he anticipated a time when some might try to refute the Holocaust. He wanted to ensure that the world would never forget what had happened. "The things I saw beggar description... The visual evidence and the verbal testimony of starvation, cruelty and bestiality were so overpowering... I made the visit deliberately, in order to be in position to give first-hand evidence of these things if ever, in the future, there develops a tendency to charge these allegations merely to 'propaganda'." #PresidentsDay #President #Eisenhower #WWII #WWIIHistory #Army #Holocaust (Photo Courtesy of @ikelibrary)
Happy #PresidentsDay! I'm watching "Presidents at War" on the History Channel this weekend. It covers how many of our U.S. presidents served in WW2 and how their experiences shaped our American history. Here’s the History Channel review: "Presidents at War" is a two-night History event. This landmark series tells the story of World War II through the experiences of eight remarkable men. Men who, like sixteen million other Americans, bravely serve their country during its darkest hour, and then go on to further service as the nation’s Commanders-in-Chief. Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. This is the story of how their war experiences change them, how they emerge from conflict as leaders and how the crucible of war shapes the decisions they make when they reach the White House." It is part docudrama/ part documentary on Mon. night (Feb 18th - part 1: 6pm E/ 5pm C; through part 2: 8pm E/ 7pm C). (I watched part 1 last night, & they are replaying it today. I recommend watching it; it is a fascinating, well-researched history.) 📷(Photo: History Channel via tvweeklynow.com; unfortunately, the photo got cropped. 2019 Holocaust Remembrance Calendar of Events “Holocaust Remembrance: Demand and Defend Your Human Rights”
The theme of the Holocaust remembrance and education activities this year is “Holocaust Remembrance: Demand and Defend Your Human Rights”. This theme encourages youth to learn from the lessons of the Holocaust, act against discrimination and defend democratic values in their communities, at a time when the spread of Neo-Nazism and hate groups fuels the rising antisemitism and other forms of hatred around the world. The theme highlights the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
