Workhorse is a fermented tea that’s gentle on the stomach, making it a staple in the diet of Tibetan and Mongolian nomads. It’s delicious on its own, and excellent as a soup base. A workhorse, easy going day in and out.
For more info about fermented tea, ask Geoff! - he’ll be hosting our next event, ‘Discovering Fermented Tea.’

A kind of pact in Chinese culture - practiced in the town of Hunan - which united two friends for eternity.
The special thing about this agreement was that it also had a secret language to communicate freely with each other: the nu-shu, female language, written in fans, clothes, palms, or embroidery on fabrics.
We don't have that language, but we can communicate with each other in ways that no others understand, even with a single look, it's like we read each other minds and I'm grateful for that. I'm pretty sure that our friendship is forever.
Meet our bartender, Harry! Harry recently took some time off for an amazing trip to Europe but brought a piece of SHK with him!
Here's what Harry shared with us about his trip:
In the late summer of 2018 I was fortunate enough to travel much of the Mediterranean, including the coasts of Italy and Croatia, as well as the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, and Malta. In between the obligatory pastas, paninis, meats, and cheeses (as well as assorted wines and the occasional aperol spritz) I truly found myself falling in love with the various unique cultures that are spread across the region. Somewhere along the line, between meals of fresh octopus salad and samplings of Marsala wine, I made a point of breaking out my Sumiao t-shirt and getting a few photos.
I am proud to work in a restaurant that values and takes to heart the same sense of pride in traditional cuisine and cooking methods that I saw on display in Dubrovnik, Porto Fino, Malta and Sicily. I am equally proud to be part of a team that finds ways of preserving these traditions, without sacrificing ingenuity when shaping the menu. Whether it’s behind the bar or in the kitchen, traditional ingredients and flavors are always on the minds of our chefs and bartenders. The phrase on the back of our t-shirts ‘A very good restaurant’ is also a promise that we make to our customers when they walk through the door. We will do everything we can to ensure that the people who trust us with their business leave happy and with full bellies.
Fenghuang, praised as "the most beautiful town in China", is a small county town renowned for its natural beauty, rich history, colorful ethnic customs, and photogenic night scenery. The best way to see the town is by walking around it. You can visit historical wooden buildings, have a close-up experience with the local people, and immerse yourself in its cultural atmosphere 🏮
