As part of this journey, I am not just looking to change physically. I am also striving to become a better person physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
I was getting slightly annoyed with a fellow gym member. This member stayed on a machine for 45 minutes and probably did 3 sets. The rest of the time they were on their phone.
I remember a commencement speech I heard a few years ago. It is called This is Water by David Foster Wallace. He gave this speech in 2005. (Check it out on YouTube.) The theme of the speech is that man is inherently selfish. When you are feeling frustrated and impatient towards an individual, stop and consider that maybe this individual could possibly have a harder life than you.
For example, you are on your way home for work and it was a stressful day and you're stuck in traffic. You realize you don't have anything for dinner. So, you fight through traffic to get to the grocery store and the grocery store is full of people in the same position as yourself. You grab a cart and of course you grab the cart with the crappy wheel. You finally make your way through the store dodging people who are just meandering through the aisles. You get to the check out lanes and of course there are far fewer lanes open then there should be. You choose your lane and you notice that the cashier is moving really slow and looks exhausted. You think to yourself that the cashier would be more successful if they took responsibility for their life and not party all night. Maybe they would have a better job than a cashier. What you don't know is this cashier hasn't slept for three days because she has been holding her husband's hand who is dying from bone cancer. She needs to continue to work to provide for her family.
You just never know what is going on in somebody else's life. So, let's all be little bit more patient and kind with each other. You never know how your kindness could ease somebody's pain.
